If yours is new enough, HP may provide compatible software. Sometime.

I guess I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I have an OfficeJet 7210
and although I haven't sent a fax via my Vista Ultimate, I am still able to
fax using the printer keypad interface. I created the fax header page using
Word and then printed it. Then, taking that plus the other pages I wanted
to fax I put in the printer hopper and pushed the "fax" button, entered the
fax number I wanted and voila! The fax was sent. I can also read my
digital camera's memory card via my printer. I can basically do everything
with my printer now with Vista that I could do when I had XPSP2 installed.
Right now it is generally buyer beware when buying hardware that may or may
not play well with Vista.

Why can't you fax using the printer keypad interface? Just print a header
page from Word or whatever and the pages you need to fax (assuming they are
in your PC) and then fax. I am running Vista Ultimate and have an OfficeJet
7210 and even though I can't install HP's Directory software I am still able
to send faxes. I'm also able to capture pictures from my digital camera's
memory card using the slots on the printer. I can do just everything with
my 7210 now with Vista Ultimate as I was able to when I had XPSP2 installed.
I think for the time being, it is buyer beware when it comes to buying
hardware and software that may or may not be compatible with Windows Vista.
I do some on-line research before going and spending my $s on something that
I know then will work just fine, or at least fine enough that I won't
complain.

The full featured driver is now available from HP. You can download it

I wonder if that's the same s/w offered now for the 7210 AIO. I can't make
it work, and 4 1/2 hours with HP technical support today didn't work.
The package looks comprehensive, part of it works, I can even see estimated
ink levels once again. However, the main part of the app when launched
flashes the program's opening screen, then immediately a dialog box pops up
with "no HP products found, Something (can't remember name) Center will now
close. THis is on a Sony Vaio running Vista Ultimate, 2gigs RAM, no errors
during installation; just something not quite right about the installation
program. Usually you get a dialog box that the installation is finished;
this just quietly exits, no errors (takes quite a while, all 163MB).
The tech, and there were some problems in understanding language-wise, had
me delete a couple registry keys, uninstall everything, we went through it 4
times, and the result was always the same. I have a case number and a
promised callback in 3 days, the tech indicated that it was new software and
they will work on my case.
I'm was elated to see the comprehensive driver show up - but really let down
when it didn't install completely. Vista works fine for me but I've had
sort of a grudge against HP for not getting out a s/w package for the
all-in-ones at the release of Vista (yes, I've read all about how this
couldn't be, poor MS, poor HP, etc.
It was also interesting that the technician tried to sell me ink cartridges
and an extended warranty that I tried to understand (!) during the times
when Windows is doing it's installation thing or rebooting. It seemed a
little strange to hear this sales pitch, while working for hours on a
support problem. Every time I was put on hold, there was a guitar
recording - playing - distorted Christmas music on March 22. So here we
have a tech support person from India trying to sell me an extended warranty
on a printer that "lost it's comprehensive drivers" when I "upgraded"
(should have waited like everyone says) and hearing "I Saw Three Ships" and
other Christmas tunes when placed on hold. No opportunity is ever lost for
marketing. Perhaps someone should suggest (NOT) that MS push an anytime
upgrade on people calling for Vista support while waiting! Some marketeer
will no doubt pick up on this by coincidence. Yuck.
Anyway the file I got is AIO_CDB_Full_Network_enu.exe and you can get it at
hp.com, and it would be great to find out if my Vista installation is flawed
or if others experience the same problem.
I asked the tech if having the ability to scan from Ultimate is a possible
conflict, he said no.
It's only March ;)

I have the same file, installed in Vista Ultimate for a Photosmart 2610. I
just successfully scanned a two page document to PDF without a problem. Are
you connected via the network or USB? I am connected via a wired network.

A similar thing happened to me during installation - it sat for a long time
at 96% complete; when I started to drag the progress window to another part
of the screen, it just went away.

I'm perplexed by this, I would have expected a lot of USB HP AIO users would
be saying something... I dunno. At any rate, HP has promised a Tuesday
callback but I couldn't quite understand everything said; I believe I was
encouraged to give HP another 3 weeks or so on this... I did try to ensure
that the install program detected the printer; it did. I believe the
installation prompts to print a test page, and I did; it worked, and I
thought things were going to be OK. But that "HP Solution Center" flashes
for just a second (really too quickly to know what it really is) before the
box popup with "no HP device detected." I can successfully scan with
Windows Fax and Scan anyway, and with the bits and pieces of what installed,
I "think" I can check ink levels once again (shows half empty - or is it
half full?). I know I liked working with HP's scan program before... and I
haven't really gone through this but it appears that at least part of
initial FAX setup (or change) in the all-in-one is now done over the web,
instead of being done in an applet on the PC (a wizard in HP's software back
in XP days).

My experience is pretty much the same as yours - it detected the printer
during installation (printer is networked rather than USB). It didn't print
a test page, though. Says it can't find an HP printer when the HP app is
launched. Printing does work.
