I set up a screen saver in Windows Vista, but it never comes on. I can
activate it by previewing, but it never starts on its own.

A background process is active preventing the screen saver to activate.
Are you using a wireless Microsoft mouse?
Try this:
In taskmanager\processes tab Right-click ehtray.exe, and then click End
Process
Last June, I installed Vista Beta and bought Microsoft USB wireless Keybord
and Mouse 6000.
The Screen saver and Power options did not work.
Th same problem with Vista RC1.
The same problem with with Vista RC2
The same problem with Vista RTM Ultimate.
But, now, it works . . . at last!
The only thing I installed is this update coming from Windows

Installation date: 2007-02-05 20:13
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Optional

Thank you very much. Too bad windows help has nothing to offer put to tell
me how to turn it on which I did at least a dozen times to no avail until I
followed your advice.
I downloaded it and now my screen
saver is working great and I still have my wireless mouse and keyboard going.
I have the same problem, how do you get to the taskmanager\processes Tab??
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del
This brings up a menu screen, the last option is "Start Task Manager". Click
on it and then select the tab "Processes".
PLEASE LOOK AT THIS:
If problems causing the screen saver malfunction as if something was preventing it from activating, and you have tried everything else: Here is what to do:
(This solution is absent in the MS database. I have tried to tell them, but no response :(
Go to the "Device Manager" on your computer.
In the list of Human Interface Devices, look up an entry called: HID-compliant consumer control device.
This one may be entered twice, causing the "hick up". Try disabling one of them; usually the last entry works best. You may loose some functionality of an advanced keyboard or mouse, but I have never seen that happen. Never the less, test both for best performance.
This should solve all your problems if nothing else works!
This became a non issue after THREE YEARS
I have a problem with my screen saver it comes on and all but my screen saver gets cut :/ like the picture I use gets hacked into a tiny box and thrown into the top left corner of my screen it doesn't even show all the picture either! I don't have a wireless mouse or keyboard and I checked for the HID thing but I don't have that either :/ im confused all the other screen saver options work fine but I would like too see my pictures though.
