    Duplex printing bug head to toe - HP printer

    Hi,
    I have an HP Officejet 6110 which is using the Vista built in driver (there
    is no driver from HP). I have the duplex unit attached but Vista refuses to
    allow me to print duplex in Portrait with the pages back to back. Instead it
    insists on printing "Flip up pages" i.e. the pages are head to toe so you
    read the first page and flip it lengthwise instead of widthwise. There is a
    setting "Flip Pages Up" which is supposed to control this but it has no
    effect. I have seen other people with different HP printers but the same
    problem (google). Apparently it does work correctly in landscape but I
    haven't tried that.
    I do try not to print things out often but when I do I use duplex so this is
    painful.
    Are there any plans to fix the driver or any workarounds (no manual duplex
    is not a workaround by the way!)

    Weird!
    Both my duplex capable printers use the terms:
    My HP Deskjet:
    "Flip on long edge" and "Flip on short edge"
    The terms do not change when I change the print processor setting for
    the printer from: "Winprint" to "hpzpplhn"

    My other printer is a Brother MFC8820DN

    Both print Portrait mode Long edge flip properly.
    (sometimes refereed to as Long edge Binding)

    There are a couple other threads back on 9-Feb-07 about this issue also
    happening on OJ 7210 and OJ 7310's.The duplexing prints flip-up no matter what preference you've selected in
    the driver settings.

    I have the same problem with the OfficeJet 7210. I reported it on RC2 but
    today there is not a fix other than to use Manual Duplex.
    Since many of us seem to have the same problem (I have DJ5550), can you maybe post the drivers as an interim solution to one of the file sharing web sites (with a Beta disclaimer etc...) and post the link?

    I got the patch for my HP Photosmart 3210 All-In-One and it
    works:party:. Duplex printing is usable again. Thank you very much.

    Bob, do you have the patch for a Photosmart c7180?
    This is brilliant. Hours of frustration over 8 months relieved in a few
    easy steps. It beggars belief that the boys at HP haven’t dealt
    with this.

    Bob, this worked a treat. Thank you so much. 8 months of head-banging
    frustration relieved in 15 minutes. Why, oh why, can't HP disseminate
    this to their customers?

    I'll report that I have an OfficeJet D135 with the duplex module installed,
    and cannot set automatic duplex printing at all.

    If I try to OK or Apply after selecting the "Print on both sides" option, I
    get an error indicating that I have conflicting settings, those settings
    being:

    "Print on both sides : Flip on Long Edge (Standard)"
    and
    "Media Type : Plain Paper"

    It makes no matter what I set as the media type, it won't allow duplex.

    What's really cute is that since I'm using a JetDirect - purchased with the
    printer - I can't scan with it in Vista either, and of course HP's website
    advises me that I may want to upgrade to a new product. Lucky me, my
    expensive SOHO printer was a lesson learned!

    You actually have to set that you have the duplex module installed in the
    Properties of the Printer, Device Settings, set the duplex unit to installed.
    Then you should be where I am.
    You should also be able to scan using Windows Fax & Scan in Vista, it's
    actually a lot better than the HP software.

    I'm having the same problem with my HP Deskjet 5150. Actually, I just
    discovered that the duplexing feature was suddenly active after reading this
    newsgroup. Is there really some progress on this issue? I was about to buy a
    different printer to get duplexing back.

    HP does have the fix and they are working to get the 20 drivers that have
    the same issue onto Windows Update.

    In the meantime the HP driver developer who determined the issue told me I
    could hand out the fix
    mail me directly since I can't send the file using outlook.

    I had the same problem with my 7410 HP printer and Bob was "THE MAN". I
    have applied Bob's patch to fix this issue and it works like a charm! I am
    thoroughly disappointed with HP. I wrote them about the problem with the
    7310/7410 printers and they gave me the run around with some sort of
    temporary fix for another model printer with a message that they were
    working on the problem and hoped to have a solution in "6-8 months".
    Unacceptable!!

    FWIW, like many others I'm stunned about this state of affairs.
    While Googling for solutions to this problem I found forum posts
    dating back to the beta versions of Vista outlining the very same
    problems I and many others are experiencing presently in Nov. 2008. I
    gather HP provided the defective drivers to MS for inclusion w/ Vista
    and am dumbfounded as to why they have thus far failed to address the
    issue with the d135 and numerous other models. I've considered
    upgrading to a different printer, but surely didn't plan on being
    "forced" into it by a lack of functional drivers. I've had good
    success with my current and previous HP printers, but must say this
    experience makes me hesitant to go the HP route again lest I find my
    new printer becomes worthless when MS introduces Windows 7.

    I'm not sure HP admits to being "aware of this issue." Several weeks ago, I
    spent 4 hours on their CHAT service with 3 different tech "support" people.
    None knew of the problem. None had a solution. All stepped me through a
    variety of "fixes" without any success - including uninstalling my 7310,
    installing a 6500 driver (which I don't have) and making changes to my
    registry. Some of their suggestions caused me to reboot so the CHAT session
    was lost. They said not to worry, the next technician would be able to look
    up the progress by case number. Not once could they find the case. I had
    copied all the dialog into a WORD file so just copied it back into their
    little bitty window when they asked me how they could help.

    Bottom line - no one at HP seems to know anything. By good fortune, I met
    Bob Hendrick on this newsgroup and he sent me the patch. It works fine now.
    Bob's patch was easy enough to install and directions clear enough that I
    would think even HP "support" people could do it.

    This saddens me. Bob has had a patch that works for over a year now. HP
    won't acknowledge the problem as recently as a 4 hour CHAT session in March
    09. What gives with HP? Why won't they fix their drivers?

    The fix came from a print driver developer at HP. Support is the big
    failure on this. Thanks BOB for the continuing support of the MS
    communities and HP alternate support .

    HP has released a buch of drivers with the duplex fix on Windows Update.
    You have to search for them and make sure they are the right language and
    x86 or x64 versions.

    This is a bug in Vista inbox driver (Vista RTM - Nov 2006). We (HP) fixed it
    right away but it is not reached to the MS bug fixing bar for Vista SP1 and
    it had hard time to make it to work on Windows Update. Thanks to Alan for
    helping/forwarding a big number of GPDs to customers to fix them.

    Now this model (Photosmart 8200 series) is rechecked into Win7 inbox with
    the fix.

    It may still be a problem for Eric today to get it from WU due to Windows
    Update issue. The fixed package is on the WU though. Eric may try to
    download and install yourself from

    There is a long list for drivers. The highlighted one in the below snapshot
    is the right fixed one for Vista inbox x86 (dated 5/1/2007). The one right
    above it is the x64 driver Eric needs.

    I am joining the "Thanks Bob" group of excited Vista users. My HP
    7410xi printer was printing alternate pages upside down when I used
    duplex printing. I emailed Bob yesterday (Bob Headrick bobh@mvps.org)
    and today I am soooooooo happy! I followed the instructions and it
    worked the first time.

    Alan, I also have a 7310, and i just got a new laptop that runs vista... the 7310 works fine with our other computers that run on XP, but not when I print from the new computer with Vista. Could you also send me the fix? Thanks. I have tried to click on the link that you have posted, but it keeps coming up as a dead link...

    I am running Vista 32-Bit with HP Officejet 7310 and having the same "flipped" page when duplexing. I am not a real "techie" and certainly cannot afford another printer. But after contacting Bob and receiving the Patch mentioned above, it works GREAT!

    Had the same issue with the 7310 flipping the pages in duplex, two-sided mode. Alan sent me his patch -- a single "gpd" file that replaces the existing 7310 gpd file. Relatively painless once you know where to place the file (and stop/restart the spooling service)

    Your patch can work for my hp deskjet 5652 on vista ultimate 32-bit.
    In addition, the Print Preferences cannot be saved after I followed your instructions.
    After I deleted the printer and added it again in "control panel -> printers", it works perfectly.

    HP Officejet 7310.
    Thanks Bob, your patch worked first time, great to be able to print double sided again (not flipped).
    My IT guy was hacked off, he's spent hours trying to sort it (no fix, no pay), he probably spent 4 hours on it!

    I'm not sure OUTSTANDING even does it - the reply to my request came quickly with great instructions, and behold! my duplex printing problem is solved. Thanks Bob!

    I too have problems with duplex printing on a HP7310. I have just
    purchased a Sony Laptop with Vista Premium x64 and the printer refuses
    to print book form, just flip pages head to toe.
    Since I am new to this game, how do I email

    Read the messages from Alan Morris [MSFT] and email him, using your
    common sense to determine his actual email address from his posted
    spam-harvesting-resistant version ..... <g>

    Looks like I declared success too soon. The gpd changeout worked. However, I found last night that HP Solution Center refuses to open because it can't find the printer. Also, the printer has disappeared from the computer's list of printers. I have no reason to believe the gpd change caused this. If anyone has advice, I'd appreciate it.

    Thank you for the quick reply, instructions and patch. Vista x32 and
    HP Officejet 7410 are now producing two sided print without any coaxing.

    I sent the following email to the "Chairman of the Board" (bod@hp.com) and to Mark Hurd @ HP.

    I've been dealing with HP since Mar 07 re VISTA and Duplex printing on my Officejet 7310. January 30 I was told that the VISTA Service Pack 1 "might fix the problem". I installed it last week and it didn't fix the problem. The 7310 still prints duplex in "FLIP MODE ONLY".

    I spoke with Microsoft support two days ago and the support rep I spoke with indicated he was aware of the "HP VISTA DUPLEX PRINT" problem and said it is a HP problem. This has gone on far too long. Please look into the "VISTA Duplex Print Problem" and see if you can get some resolution.

    If HP is not able to resolve this problem that has been ongoing for 18 months, I request that HP replace my 7310 with printer that works or refund my money ($249 @ Office Max Feb '07).

    Also I have been told by HP support that they don't have a single printer that supports "AUTO" duplex print function under VISTA. I checked several HP "ALL-In-Ones" on line and if you look hard enough you'll find the following - "Two-Sided Print (Duplexing) Option Is Not Available in Windows Vista Even Though an Automatic Two-Sided Printing Accessory is Installed"

    What happened to HP. I've used HP printers for 20 years and have installed dozens at work. Till VISTA came along all was well as far as I was concerned. Their tech support was the best. Now - - ?

    For others with problems duplexing in Vista with HP Inkjet printers I have a patch available that corrects the issue of the back side printing upside down for a number of printers. You can request the patch by sending me an email (to bobh@mvps.org or see my profile for email address). Please put Vista Duplex and the printer model in the subject line so that it does not get lost in the spam. I have patches for the following:

    Business InkJet 1000
    Business InkJet 2200/2250
    Business InkJet 2230/2280

    HP Color InkJet cp1700 (also addresses A3 and tabloid paper size issue)

    DeskJet 5550 series
    DeskJet 5600 series

    Bob, your file and instructions fixed the problem with the duplex printing on my HP 7310xi all in one printer.

    HP's lack of action on this problem is certainly disappointing to me. I had just bought a new HP multimedia pc to replace my HP laptop (gave it to Mrs.). The new pc came preloaded with Vista home premium 64 bit. Let's see now....new HP pc preloaded with Vista and a recent generation HP printer, yet they can't fix this problem except by a TACKY workaround?

    I purchase a new pc every year or so and I will double think before I consider any more HP products.

    I finally installed the patch on my VISTA machine. It appears to have corrected the 90 (maybe) degrees out of phase flip. The reason I say “APPEARS” is that I normally do not use this machine, and only did a few tests. This machine is mainly used by another family member.

    Being new to VISTA and not finding things EXACTLY as I have in older Windows machines, I did not go into COMMAND mode. I did the renaming and copying in WIDOWS.

    Oh by the way. It took me longer to sign up for this board than it took to install and test the patch.

    I got the duplex printing fix from Bob Headrick (bobh@proaxis.com). As I am not command line knowledgeable it took me some time to install the fix, but it did work! Thanks Bob

    A couple of tips for the command line challenged:
    Do a Vista Search for command prompt, then right click and run as administrator.

    Enter the commands and then hit the Enter Key for each command.
    Place the .gpd file on the desktop
    Get it's path and directory by right clicking on the file and then selecting properties
    to Copy you cannot copy and paste. You must enter the command
    Copy C: path name you got above

    I just want to add my thanks to Bob.
    After an embarrassing number of years of checking back with HP once every 5 or 6 months for a Vista driver update for my 7310, I decided it had been long enough since my last Internet search on the duplex problem that it was probably worth looking again, which brought me to this thread. An email to Bob got me the required GPD file and clear instructions within a few hours and after following them (including the sometimes required re-boot) here I am with my 7310 happily duplex printing the way it was born too and the way it always did when I was running the XP OS.
    Like many others, I have a Officejet 7310 that insisted on duplex printing "flip". Bob's patch was easy to install and has cured the problem.
    I am running Vista 64bit on a Dell Studio XPS. The printer is connected via a network.
    The patch you provided worked for my DeskJet 5652, connected through usb to my pc running Vista. It solved the flipped pages issue.

    I had the same issue with my HP7410 printer and Vista. Called HP support and was told that since my printer was out of warranty, I would have to pay to speak with them. After 3 worthless chat sessions with HP support - uninstall/reinstall software, reset printer (requiring a reentry of the WiFi WEP codes, etc), and installing a patch that was intended to keep network printers visible in the printer selection on Vista - none of these "solutions" did anything except waste my time.

    I searched for this issue online and located this forum. I found a link to 'Bob' who had a patch for this issue. I contacted Bob (see info below) and he promptly sent me an e-mail with the patch and detailed instructions to install it.

    Voila!!! In less than 5 minutes I am now able to print in duplex with the 2nd page oriented correctly!!!!

    Contact Bob Headrick (see post dated 17-07-2008 10:46 AM in this forum) at bobh@proaxis.com and put Vista Duplex and the printer model in the subject line. Within a few hours, you will receive the patch and in a few minutes you will be printing again!

    Thanks Bob! Really appreciate the help.
