settings.ini is being used by another process....

I'm getting this message upon boot up of Vista. It only happens on my
desktop profile, not on any other users' desktops. The result is no sidebar,
no search capability, and some other quirky things. My hard drive is
spinning constantly as well. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am getting this same message. I started getting it after I loaded Office
2003 and did the updates. Maybe this additional info will help.

I have the same issue.

My Dell System has two partitions. Windows XP Professional on one drive.
Second drive has Windows Vista Business on other partition. I boot to both
drives daily.
XP was installed first and then the system was paritioned into two using
Partition Magic. Then on the second partition I formatted the drive and
installed Windows Vista Business on it.

On the Vista Business side, I have Office 2007.

I am getting the same message about settings.ini and an additional message
Location is not available. C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop
is not accessible.

Access is denied.

I notice when I turn off UAC User Account Control then I get my desktop back
without seeing any more of these issues. The last thing I want to do is turn
off the UAC.

Any workarounds so that I can keep UAC enabled?

I had the same issue. I was able to fix it by doing a System Restore:
Control Panel, Classic View, System, Change Settings, System Protection,
System Restore. It took a few minutes but it fixed it. By the way, after
all these years and Microsoft gives us more of the same crap? I think Vista
ultra sucks, I can't wait to get a Mac. Good luck fixing your problems.

On my new Sony, I removed Office 2003 trial and updated Photoshop elements
and somewhere there, this problem occurred. I deactivated UAC, as you did and
my desktop is back to normal. Agreed it is no good to keep it off

Hi, if you go to the location of the problem and right click then go to
properties, then go to the Security tab and click edit, you'll then be
able to restore access to whichever problem you might have (i.e.
C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop
is not accessible. Access is denied. - the "Desktop") by making sure
all boxes under the heading "allow" have a tick in them.

I had this problem this afternoon and after playing around finally
figured it out!!!
