I have heard rumors that Windows will be redesigning logo for their products. The usual logo with four squares in Wavy pattern will now be retired and will be replaced by another logo for Windows 8. Is it true? Has anybody else followed this news?

The logo of Microsoft that is of 4 squares in wavy pattern was first assigned to Windows 3.0 released in May 1990. It was later modified by many people and organizations. The modification included changes in colors, adding gradient and different animations to it. Some of them were included in other products of Microsoft over the years. Rumors of logo change in Windows 8 were high but Microsoft hasn’t retired it. They just have modified the logo keeping the base 4 wavy square the same.
As declared by Windows during work process of Windows 8, that they will explore every component of Windows to give best to its customers. This exploration has also been set for search of modified logo. During this process, Windows hired many agencies to work on the logo for Windows 8. The wavy squares are long recognized mark of Windows. So stepping back on it was not possible for Windows. Windows wanted heir logo to be of Metro theme that would be liked by all.
If we look back at the evolution of logo of Windows, it all began with a simple logo in form of image with limited set of colors and now we have 3D high quality graphics with advanced animations for the logo. With the advancement in technology, the resources to render high quality graphics too increased. This led to evolution of simple logo to animated high quality logo.
I have been using computer with windows on it since long time. The first logo of Windows was very simple one. It had 4 nun-uniform blue squares as a logo with Microsoft Windows written along with it. There was no wavy effect or any other effect. It was just a basic image that would appear.

The next logo that Windows adopted was a 4 differently colored square in a wavy pattern. It is the longest known logo windows to everyone. It was widely used for Windows products in 90s. The wavy effect gave a sense of motion. To add to the wavy effect a trail of colors was added to left end of the logo. Many people still remember Windows by that logo.

The next incarnation of logo which came in Windows XP had a great development. It was given texture like plastic. It had a shine that added to the plastic effect. It also had a background shadow that created an illusion of it being 3D. It was placed along with Start button. Even the interface of Operating system had a major makeover. The quality of logo had greatly increased.

Later on with launch of Windows Vista, the logo again faced great changes. The logo is now known as ‘Pearl’ The 4 wavy squares are now enclosed in a spherical ball. The texture of the ball is like a glass. The lighting and rendering has given it a glassy feel. It shows how advanced the rendering engine of computer are now available. Also at the beginning launch screen, the logo is formed in pattern that requires visual effects to create. The Start button of Windows is now replaced by the Pearl. This logo is still used in Windows 7.
