    I am not sure why u get this error, but since u getting a "not a valid application" in XP may be running it in Compatibility will help.

    To do that, Right Click on nfshs.exe and click Properties. Go to the COmpatibility tab and under Compatibility Mode, check (tick) the box and select Windows 98/Windows ME option. Click OK and see if the game runs.[B]

    First the bad news
    This probelm has been reported after geetin an xp patch.E.A have been reported that they didn't design the game to run properly in the xp enviroment.

    The good news
    Here are few solutions u can try... one by one

    1.Check for hard disk space
    If you get "Your hard drive has less than 1MB free space." Then Use QfixApp on FSHS.exe.
    Qfixapp is in the "\Program Files\Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit\applications" folder, run it and under fixes look for EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace check it off for nfshs and run the program. If you wish to keep the settings just click the "advanced" button and click "create fix support". click "2GbGetDiskFreeSpace.dll" Click the "Advanced" tab. Then click "Create attributes file".
    Then go to the AppPatch folder in the Windows folder and click on NFSHS.reg
    Now run the game and you will not receive that error message anymore!
    Reinstall this .reg if you reinstall windows!
    2.Reinstall the 4.50 patch.
    That will replace the NFSHS.EXE file with one that has collision, and should not give you that error.
    The 4.50 isn't a "patch", it just installs the 4.50 version of NFSHS.EXE and NFSHS.ICD. You end up with a "clean" NFSHS.EXE. If this doesn't work, copy NFSHS.EXE and NFSHS.ICD from your cd-rom, then run the 4.50 patch updater.
    If you don't rename NFSHSNC.EXE, then you can have the clean 4.50 version of NFSHS.EXE, and the no collision version, NFSHSNC.EXE, and just create a shortcut to NFSHSNC.EXE to let you choose either one.
    3.:at option,play around with the registry
    Use QfixApp on NFSHS.exe and click "2GbGetDiskFreeSpace.dll" Click the "Advanced" tab. Then click "Create attributes file".
    Then go to the AppPatch folder in the Windows folder and click on NFSHS.reg
    Now run the game and you will not receive that error message anymore!
    Reinstall this .reg if you reinstall windows!
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes]
    "Version"="4.00"
    "InstallPath"="F:\\Games\\Need For Speed High Stakes"
    "3D Device Description"=""
    "3D Card"=""
    "Thrash Driver"="d3da"
    "Group"="D3D"
    "D3D Device"=dword:00000001
    "Triple Buffer"=dword:00000001
    "Hardware Acceleration"=dword:00000001
    "Thrash Resolution"="1024X768"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes\1.0]
    "Language"=dword:00000001
    "Variant"=dword:00000000
    "InstLev"=dword:00000002
    "SrcDrive"="G:\\"
    Copy everything inside the ______! Now make the appropriate changes for your configuration. For instance, if your video card card not handle Triple Buffering then modify the "Triple Buffer"=dword:00000001 line to "Triple Buffer"=dword:00000000. If you want to play in a different resolution then modify 1024X768 to whatever resolution you wish. If your NFHS CD is in a different CDROM then change the "G:\\" to the letter of your CDROM Drive. Once your changes have been made then save the file as NFSHS.REG. Now double-click on the file and merge it into your registry. You can now play NFSHS in D3D and in Hi-Res!

    Delete / Rename gimme.dll in the game directory and it should work fine.

    What is the exact error you are getting in it? That game is not officially compatible with XP.

    Hmm....do this....i did this and it completely worked

    NOTE : This method MAY work ONLY with a genuine NFSHS CD....

    1. Install the game "full".
    2. Download the NFS Patch 4.50
    3. UnRAR the d3da.dll i have attached to the \3Dsetup directory.

    Insert the cd, u r ready to go....

    NOTE : I tried this after seeing this thread.....it did work for me, i didnt use any compatibility mode
