Borderlands is often gently teased for his number of arms absolutely delusional. Yet beyond the numbers, the new project developers Brothers in Arms cache real potential, with its post-apocalyptic world, its gameplay between FPS and role-playing game and its new design inspiration.
Let's immediately, we could not try Borderlands directly. It took just to attend a presentation in which two developers were playing. Two? Yes, Borderlands is designed to be played cooperatively. And what happened in the past for one simple promise was indeed fulfilled before our eyes. The title can be traveled to four, both online and as LAN and in split screen. Your avatar will be the same solo and multi. You can play very well all alone (there were no allies led by the IA), and then receive an invitation from a friend to join him and hop in a few seconds, you're in the part, its sides still in the skin of your character.
The characters just talk about. There are four predefined archetypes: the Brick Berserker; Lilith the Siren, able to use alien technology; Mordecai the Hunter, follower arms distance Roland, the basic soldier versatile. However, you can rename the protagonist of your choice, and especially deciding on its development in many trees as they gain experience. For example, Brick can be a true tank, capable of absorbing a lot of damage, or will turn into steam roller if you choose to specialize in the fight melee. That's the role-playing title. In the same vein, it will be possible to unlock new skills. To keep the example of Brick, Gearbox showed us a capability that is a discharge of adrenaline, with the effect that one can easily imagine .
And what is the purpose of these characters you probably ask yourself? Well their motives are crass material: not too dwell on history, developers have identified the players as mere treasure hunters, a sort of unlikely cross between Indiana Jones and Mad Max ... It must be said that the post-apocalyptic world of Borderlands necessarily holds tons of items just waiting to be discovered. Yes, here we are, the famous arsenal of the game that has done so much about him. This time it's the word "million" that was released to raise the number available ! It must be said that the game uses a system of random generation of items, which allows to create many different weapons, classified by a color code which again recalls the RPG (green, blue, purple ...). In addition to conventional weapons, Borderlands will also offer a wide range of rifles aliens or experimental.
Once our characters created and equipped as it should, therefore, here they are released into a vast open world full of quests to do. Obviously, most of them will sooner or later clashes. We have been able to see both players struggling , small reptiles that you jump in the mouth as surely a Headcrab, then with the larger version that spits fire. But also spiders, mutants ... The bestiary is varied and rather successful. It must be said that Borderlands is visually very attractive, thanks largely to its new design called "concept art style, much more inspired than the generic design previously used. The game now has its own personality rather than something like fade seen a thousand times. Everything depends on the strength of the Unreal Engine 3.
Finally, remember it is also possible to drive vehicles. In the sequence shown, cooperation was still putting a player at the wheel, the other manning the turret. A phase that appeared as fun as the rest. With all these ingredients, Borderlands could well become a hit, especially since it does not finally known. While it draws its inspiration here and there, reusing ideas already seen elsewhere, the baby of Gearbox is a unique, far more productions formatted say that the studio we were accustomed. Riskier, more creative, this new project promises to be under the best auspices. It remains to confirm these good impressions pad or keyboard in hand. Borderlands is scheduled on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC and Gearbox hopes to see out the month of October.
