The PSP isn't generally regarded as a hotbed for sports games, but there are a few series that have found success on the handheld, one of which is Sony's MLB series. MLB 07: The Show doesn't mess with success, and in many ways it feels like a slightly enhanced version of last year's game. However, its one big addition, road to the show, is a good one and offers a whole new way to progress through a professional baseball career. MLB 07: The Show is a great value if you're looking for a simulation or just want to play a few quick games here and there.

More than perhaps any other professional sport, the road to baseball's highest echelon is one of the longest and most convoluted. Unlike in other sports, where players transfer directly from college and (in some cases) high school, even the hottest baseball prospects can expect to spend a good amount of time grinding in the minor leagues before ever getting a chance to step to the plate in an MLB stadium. The development team behind the upcoming MLB 07: The Show understands the long and winding road to the show, as evidenced by the improved career mode found in this year's game.

MLB 07 The Show makes the transition to next-gen with a suite of advanced features in its race to become MVP of 2007's baseball crop. The all-new Road to The Show mode enables gamers to play both offense and defense from the created player's perspective. Providing an even more realistic experience from the mound, the all-new New Pitch Command System (PCS) delivers comprehensive strategy to pitch selection, as a pitcher's "pitch comfort" will be predetermined based on a best to worst pitch scenario. It is up the gamer to decide if he/she should try to "work on a pitch" or just go with what is working. Additionally, with the Adaptive Pitching Intelligence (API) feature, catchers will call the game based on the individual strengths and weaknesses of each pitcher as well as analyze tendencies of batters. Gamers will now have the ability to either trust the pitches called by the catcher or shake them off. MLB 07 The Show also delivers a robust online feature set, including Online League Play, which offers the ability to set up customizable leagues with up to 30 teams, complete with full stat tracking, point benefits and rewards.

If "take me out to the ball game" is a pastime you enjoy, then MLB '07 might be a good game to pick up. But in terms of graphics and controls, this game isn't perfect. There are occasional glitches: players run through each other and a fly ball arcing out of reach of the Center Fielder will sometimes magically move downward into his mitt. That's disappointing, and would be reflected more in the score were it not for MLB '07's excellent Road to the Show mode.

Even though it doesn't have a flashy presentation and there are some bugs that probably should have been caught, MLB 07: The Show is the best baseball game on the market. There's a seemingly endless number of ways to enjoy the game, and the new road to the show is a fantastic addition to the series. Be it king of the diamond or the deep franchise mode, there's something for every type of baseball fan here.
