How to make hard drive as slave

I am running Windows XP Home on a desktop. Recently bought a new Sata 160 GB Hard Drive. Now the reason I came here is to know where we need to place the jumpers to make the HDD slave on the computer? Am bit newbie in hardware so somebody please give me detailed instruction. Thank you.

First of all let me tell you that though you are newbie in hardware, you should post your query in proper section to get proper help. Neither this is Windows XP section nor hardware. And as far as your query is concerned, Jumper settings of any recent hard drive should be available at its manufacturer’s website. Which brand HDD you bought? Please check their web page for more the settings.

As far as I know Motherboards use to have the settings to enable SATA and one more sequel setting to set as master or slave for SATA HDDs. You will need to check the same.

Also note that you will need to enable the SATA controller first from the BUOS because I guess Windows XP won’t have Sata Drivers by default. Once you enabled the same from BIOS, go to Device manager and check the SATA controller is implemented. Once done, connect the drive.
