For installing VLC you will have to exit the browser completely and restart the Macintosh and then launch the browser again and if you skip this then there are possibilities that the solution wont work, so make sure that you are performing the same, you will have to select the correct plugin as per your version of Mac OS and your CPU and for that you can just visit the below site:

For Mac OS X version 10.5 and later:
- Mac Intel processor-based: download vlc plugin 1.0.5 intel
- Based Mac PowerPC processor: download vlc plugin 1.0.5 powerpc
For Mac OS X version 10.3 and 10.4:
- Mac Intel processor-based, download vlc 0.8.6i plugin intel
- Based Mac PowerPC processor, download vlc 0.8.6i plugin powerpc
- For Mac OS X version 10.2: download vlc 0.8.4a (It does not need plugin as vlc is complete since for Mac OS 10.2)
- For Mac OS X version 10.1: download vlc 0.7.0 (It does not need plugin as vlc is complete since for Mac OS 10.1)
When you are done with the downloading process then you can just start the installation process and for that you will have to open the disk image named vlc-plugin-XXXX.dmg, here the name will be different as per the version of the plugin.

- So just click on the Continue button and then proceed
- Now select the disk where you might be willing to install the plugin and then click on the Continue button again proceed.
When you are done until here then click on Update for starting the installation, just make sure that you are logged in as admin as it requires administrator account and password for the installation, when the installation process gets completed then just exit the Setup and then open the web browsers to let the plugin take its effect.
