How to install and run FileZilla on Linux

Linux users can go to menu: In menu you can go to System and in system you need to go to Administration in Administration you need to go to Synaptic Package Manager there you will find and install FileZilla. You can use the following steps if you are using some other operating system.

First you have to go to the FileZilla web site. Go to http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

    You will see this screen:

Second: Download the FileZilla software for your chosen operating system
Here are the instructions in details for Windows users. Now as soon as installation is completed you can start up the FileZilla:

For Linux Users: Go to Internet and then FileZilla

And for Windows Users: Go to Program and then FileZilla

The screen shots which are provided below are taken form Linux where we have installed FileZilla. But don’t worry Windows and Mac users as the screen which you would see would be same as this one only.

Third: You need to create a new Site on FileZilla

Here you need to select the name: You need to go to File and then go to Site manager. Now you need t o click on the Button “New Site”.

Click the "Rename" button and then you will have to rename the site as your student username, e.g. student1, student2 etc.

Now you need to fill all the details as shown in the following screen, but yes do remember that the IP ad username you need to add are as per your requirements.

Now after doing that you need to click on OK button so that it will save your changes which you have made.

Fourth: Now you need to get connect to the server

For connecting you need to select the menu in there you need to select File and in there Site Manager after doing that you need to just double click on the new site say “student2” (this is what we have mentioned you will see the name which you have added.)

You need to type your password which you have added before. Now just to upload your files you need to follow the instruction below.

Follow these instructions to upload files to the server:

First you need to start FileZilla

By doing that you will automatically connect to the remote site via File – Site Manager – student2. By doing this you will be taken to the folder which you have on the remote Site. For example: /var/www/student2

Now just select the file which you want to upload by Local Site: as show in the above image. Now you need to just click on the filename and just drag the file to the remote folder.

Would like to tell you that you can only write the file in your own folder and you cannot browse to any other folder on the remote site.

Re: How to install and run FileZilla on Linux

There can be possibility that many users can have more than one computer at home?

Would you like to share the contents of your hard drive on your home network, so you could access the hard drive of your desktop from your laptop to surf you see online while you're living room? Then FileZilla is what you are looking for. Step for how you can install on your Linux FileZilla and start a home network very easily and, perhaps most importantly, very safe. Here we go.

Imagine you have two PCs and a laptop all connected to the internet through a router. 2 PCs and a laptop could almost be an office. Never mind that the router-connected PC or laptop as Wi-Fi router, or wired, it is all the same. Imagine that the PC is left up to 2 hard drives connected to 1 TB each, which is where we put all the movies, music, some vacation photos or whatever. The fact is that we want to access all that data from the PC up to the right or from your laptop, you can also delete files, get new ones whatever you require. FileZilla will allow us all.

The first is to get off the version of FileZilla from their download page. There will choose our architecture: i586 if we have a 32 bit (which is as normal) or x86_64 if we have a 64 bit processor. If you do not know which one to choose, choose the first. When you have downloaded the package, unzip to your desktop (right click on the package and "Extract here"). You'll get a folder called FileZilla3. Within that folder, enter "share" and then "locale". Here we see a lot of folders containing the translation of FileZilla to a stream of language. Much space and only need the folder called "en", all others we can safely remove.

Now let's cut that folder and paste it into your/home (not necessary, but I hate having on the desktop). For that, it FileZilla3 to cut the folder, click on Places> Home Folder and paste it there. Then we went into it.

We see two folders: "bin" and "share". Enter "bin" and we can see three files. Drag the first one (the one called "filezilla") to the top panel! We have a launcher for the program in our panel. We can put the icon of FileZilla that I put in the beginning of this post and you're all very well presented.

Re: How to install and run FileZilla on Linux

    Now for the interesting part.

Suppose we are in the PC2 and want to connect to PC1. We must know the internal IP address of PC1. How do we do? For in the open console PC1 (made from Applications> Accessories> Terminal) and typing the command "ip addr | grep inet". You can copy and paste into the terminal without the quotes.

Of all the results, we are interested in putting 192.168.1.100. In your case may vary, but will be very similar. We return to PC2. The final preparation is to install ssh, so take advantage of the window you have open, type "sudo apt-get install ssh." This should do both PC1 and PC2 in or on the laptop, right? Now you can click on icon on the top panel we had intended to FileZilla and open the program:

Well, almost have it. We are in the PC2 and PC1 want to connect with, for example, take something from your hard drive. How do we do? Then go to the box where it says FileZilla "Server" and put "sftp :/ / 192.168.1.100" (NOTE: this depends on the command we set up this IP address may vary on your PC and safely do so). In the next box, put your username and password PC1 OF THE PC1. That's it. Click on the button "Quick Connect" and you have access to PC1 via a sftp connection, fast and secure (which is very interesting for Wi-Fi connection, so we do not "sniff" the neighbor computer) that, among other wonders, we will resume a download is interrupted accidentally.

The operation is very simple: in the window on the left is the PC from which we connect (for example, PC2) and the window on the right we have the PC to which we connect. You can browse directories and "upload" files from one place to another in a simple, graphic and very safe. We just have to navigate through the directory, select the file you want, right click it and select "Upload" or "Download" from the popup menu, as we select the local or remote directory, respectively.

The transfer rate will be much greater if the PCs are connected by cable, but even on a wireless connection, we can see a pretty major transfer rate.

And if you tire of FileZilla how do you uninstall? Let me tell you something you have not installed, you run directly without installing anything! If you get tired of FileZilla, just go to your directory or folder where you saved the FileZilla3, delete that folder and you're done. It's that simple.
