How to migrate User Profile and Program Files on Second hard drive

SSD are the new generation hard drives. They are small, portable and quiet reliable then cylindrical drives. It is always a problem to get better performance of SSD when you install them directly and do not properly optimize the same. For an better performance just follow up my tips and install them back again. The hardware setup is entirely upto. I had posted some steps by which you can gain a much better performance in comparison to regular setup. Here I am trying to put the SSD on primary mode and also on the secondary hard drive. I wil have a large amount of data which will be in the drives and I want the data transfer at a quicker rate. If you are using Windows 7 then there are some automated settings that are done by it to optimize the same for better performance. Windows 7 just found them as a plug and play device and does all arbitrary changes to the system files to get an optimized performance out of SSD.

This tips are useful for those who are dealing with user account which stores a large number of data in the primary drive and the drive in coming times gets slow up due to largely accumulated spaces. The USERS folder always lies as the main concern when it keeps on increasing at every use. And there are setting that can avoid file corruption and secure those data. First to get an better output it will advice you to start from clean installing the operating system. That is starting from the formatting part then installing windows and then other setups.

First connect the SSDs to your motherboard. Put one at the Primary and other one on the Secondary. Connect then properly with cables and power and then install insert the Windows disc. Boot from that. If you have any of data on your hard drive do not forget to backup. This is a complete formatting so everything will be gone. Then for the first time at the time of setup when Windows ask for an name use any default user account. Do not configure any other thing. Also wipe all the partitions at the time of installation.

When you are done with the setup then create a new administrator profile with your name. This is the place where will modify Windows registry to optimize the SSD's performance. Once done reboot and do not login to any other profile except what you had created. When you are on your desktop then install all your drivers, software, updates, etc and Reboot. Do all the necessary settings needed and check back.

After when you are done with the same then click on start and then box below type Folder Option. Go to View and tick on Show hidden files and folders. Once done then right click on My Computer and then click on Manage. In that you can then start creating your primary partition on the second hard drive installed. I have a 300GB drive installed in the system. Right click and click on format. Create a partition with an random name

Now you have to create here 3 new folders. The first is Users, the second is Program file and then last one is Program Files (x86). This drive will used by your users to install games, videos, etc files which large size. You can then use the same to install programs also in easy steps and change the installation directory at the time of setup.

Once your done with that restart your system in safe mode. You can do that by rebooting and pressing F8 continuously on bootup. When you are in safe mode then go on c:\users\. Cut the default & public folder form here and move the same to your new partition users\ directory. Now click on start and type regedit. Hit entire you can see registry editor now. Look for the key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. In that right click and change the drive letter of the secondary hard drive installed. So that when you create a user account the same moves to the other directory by default and your data remains safe from being deleted while formatting. Assign the drive letter properly and reboot your system.

Now log in with your user name. Now here Windows will automatically create a profile in the new drive you had created instead of moving the same to the parent Windows directory. Now when you assign a new account windows will create a profile by default in the alternative drive without much haste. So when you save things on your desktop the same goes and get saved in the other partition securing your data to an extent.

Now again there is a little more settings that is needed to be done. For that again open registry editor. Again go to the same location - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. In here you have to modify the users key and provide them the alternate folder for saving the data. This is the new one which you created on your system before. You can right click on the folder and then modify the location of the same. You can make changes like this C:\Users to NewPartition\Users. You just need to change the drive letters here.

When all is done just reboot your system back again. Now when your users sits on the system they will not eat up your SSD's space and the data mostly by them will lies in the other hard drive separately. So at the time of format also you does not need to even back all from C. This is one of the very easy step which lets you to configure your user accounts in a different place.

The trick is really helpful when you are having a large number of users settings on your system and working. Mostly they prefer to use the desktop to copy the data and use it. Sometime adding up large data consumes the primary space and eats up the performance of your operating system. It is really better to have the entire data on a secondary partition which also reduces a risk of virus and other infection.

I still doubt on the performance. It helps to create a user profile plus the setup of operating system on a different partition. So does this really makes changes. What you get is that your primary hard drive remains entirely empty with just an operating system running on the same. So to some extent this is a waste of space there. It is better to use this trick if your primary hard drive has a less space and you introduced just a new one.
