Using Windows Application on Linux Ubuntu

You use Ubuntu Linux but you still need to use Windows programs? With VMware Player, you can create a virtual machine under Ubuntu, where you'll be able to install Windows. You can then run Windows in a window and run Ubuntu Windows software you need.

All these features are to work effectively, you can easily copy files from Windows to Ubuntu and vice versa, your Internet connection is active in Windows, your DVD drive, printer and sound card will be functional as well as your USB drive.

Finally, thanks to the Unity tool you can quickly launch Windows programs in Ubuntu individual windows. What a little blur the boundaries between the two systems.

Note that your Windows running in a virtual machine, performance will necessarily be lower than if it were a physical machine. However, for office work and multimedia, it is enough. Only games will be avoided.

    Install VMware Player:

Installing VMware Player does not pose any particular problem, except that its implementation must be done via the Terminal.

    • Click the Applications menu, point to Accessories then Terminal.
    • Open the Downloads folder using the cd command downloads and press the Enter key.
      cd downloads

    • Then enter the command gksudo bash. / WM and press the TAB key to autocomplete the name of the downloaded file. Confirm with Enter.
      gksudo bash ./WMware-Player-3.1.2-301548.i386.bundle
    • Enter your password and click OK.

    • The installation wizard for VMware Player opens. Select No to not be notified of updates and click Next.

    • Click No to not send anonymous data on your system to VMware and click Next.

    • Then click Install.

    • Once the files are copied, click Close. You can close the Terminal window.
