Steps to install a server role in Server Core installation
To install a server role in Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008, perform the procedure for the desired function, as follows.
To find the available server roles, open a command prompt and type the following:
oclist
This command displays a list of server roles and optional features available with Ocsetup.exe and server roles and optional features currently installed.
To install the DNS Server role
At a command prompt, type:
start / w ocsetup DNS-Server-Core-Role
Configure a DNS zone in the command prompt by dnscmd or remotely, using the DNS MMC snap.
To install the DHCP Server role
At a command prompt, type:
start / w ocsetup DHCPServerCore
Configure a DHCP scope in the command prompt by using netsh, or remotely, using the DHCP snap-in from Windows Server 2008. If the DHCP server is installed in an Active Directory domain, you must authorize it in Active Directory.
The DHCP Server service does not start automatically by default. Use the following configuration procedures to start automatically and start the service first.
To configure and start the DHCP Server service -
At a command prompt, type:
sc config start = auto dhcpserver
To start the service, type:
net start dhcpserver
File Services Role
The Server service is installed by default for compatibility shared administrative resources to management tools. To install additional features file server use the following commands:
To install features of the File Services role -
For the File Replication Service, type the following at a command prompt:
start / w ocsetup FRS-Infrastructure
For Distributed File System service (DFS), type:
start / w ocsetup DFSN-Server
For replication distributed file system, type:
start / w ocsetup DFSR-Infrastructure-ServerEdition
