Important tips while using Google search engine

Can not find it among the billions of Web pages that make up the Internet. To uncover information on the Internet, you must do so to use a search engine. Search engines rely on keyword indexing by robots. They thus find accurate information about a person, organization, product, and perform complex searches. Thus, by entering keywords, you get the corresponding results of all the Web pages indexed by engine.

Google is the search engine most popular thanks to its comprehensive index and the relevance of the results it returns. Learn to use it and maximize your search to get the maximum.

    Tip 1 - Simple search:

To search Google, you must break your query with keywords. It is therefore very important to choose keywords that characterize what you are looking for.

    • In your Web browser, go to the site www.google.com
    • In the search field, then enter one or more keywords on which to search. To find such information on the Renault brand, just enter Renault. You can enter multiple keywords separated by a space. To check the new Renault, enter new renault.
    • Note that by default, searches are performed on the entire Internet. To limit the search to pages select your country.
    • Then click the Search button.
    • The list of pages that match your search appear, ranked by relevance.
    • Then click on the link to the page that appears to match what you are looking for. Feel free to visit several pages of data into results.

    Tip 2 - Make a progressive research:

    • If the results page that gives you get too many answers that are not focused enough on the topic that interests you, you can refine your search.
    • After conducting a search, scroll down to bottom of results. Then click the Search link in the results.
    • Then specify your search by entering one or more new keywords and click the Search within these results.
    • Do the same way then to continue to refine your query.

Tip 3 - Increase the number of results:

    • When you search with Google, it returns you 10 results per page. Now it is possible to display more.
    • On the home page of Google, click the Preferences link.
    • In the Results section, pull down the View list and then increase the number of results to display per page, 30 for example.
    • Finally Confirm by clicking the Save Preferences button. Click the OK button in the window that appears.

Note that preferences are stored on your computer in a cookie. Your browser must accept cookies to save your settings. If you clear cookies from your browser, this setting will be lost. You will then start handling.

Tip 4 - Limit the search to recent pages:

When you search in Google, it looks in all the pages indexed, even the oldest. You can ask Google that limit the search to pages updated in the last 3 months, for example.
    • Open Google.com in your web browser.
    • Click on the Advanced Search link.
    • Pull down the list then select Date and the period during which the page you are looking for has been updated. To search for pages updated in the last 3 months, select the last 3 months.
    • Enter your keywords in the field all the words and finally click on the Google Search button.

Tip 5 -Delving into the old pages:

After performing a search with Google, the page that you visit and must contain the information you are looking for might have been modified since it was indexed by Google: you can not find anything. Fortunately for you, Google keeps archived copies of pages indexed.
    • Return to the top of your search results.
    • Then click on the Cached link just below the link on the page you want.
    • The older version of the page, as has been seen by Google is displayed.

Tip 6 - Searching for a file type:

Depending on the context, you may need to find a document especially in Google. You are such probably realized that Google will sometimes return results in the form of PDF documents. Or do you know that it is possible to find flash animations, Word documents, Excel and Powerpoint, and many others.

To restrict your search to one type of particular files, simply add the command filetype: <extension> <extension> where the extension is the type of files to search.

The 13 file types that Google recognizes are:
    • Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf)
    • Adobe PostScript (ps)
    • Lotus 1-2-3 (wk1, wk2, wk3, wk4, wk5, WKI, wks, wku)
    • Lotus WordPro (lwp)
    • MacWrite (mw)
    • Microsoft Excel (xls)
    • Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt)
    • Microsoft Word (doc)
    • Microsoft Works (wks, wps, wdb)
    • Microsoft Write (wri)
    • Rich Text Format (RTF)
    • Shockwave Flash (swf)
    • Text (ans, txt)

To find a Word document with an extension of doc, add the command filetype: doc in the keywords in your search. Word documents that match your keywords are then listed.

    Tip 7 - Image Search:

Looking for a picture to illustrate a specific topic? Never mind, search engines also have a feature to search for images on the Internet. Thus, Google can search among more than 500 million images.

    • In your Web browser, open the page images.google.com
    • Now enter your keyword in the input field and click the Search button to start the search.
    • After a few moments, the results are displayed as thumbnails. Then click on the ones you want to enlarge.
    • To save an image on your hard disk, click with right mouse and select Save As.

Re: Important tips while using Google search engine

    * Keep it simple. If you're looking for a particular company, just enter its name, or as much of its name as you can recall. If you're looking for a particular concept, place, or product, start with its name. If you're looking for a pizza restaurant, just enter pizza and the name of your town or your zip code. Most queries do not require advanced operators or unusual syntax. Simple is good.
    * Think how the page you are looking for will be written. A search engine is not a human, it is a program that matches the words you give to pages on the web. Use the words that are most likely to appear on the page. For example, instead of saying [ my head hurts ], say [ headache ], because that's the term a medical page will use. The query [ in what country are bats considered an omen of good luck? ] is very clear to a person, but the document that gives the answer may not have those words. Instead, use the query [ bats are considered good luck in ] or even just [ bats good luck ], because that is probably what the right page will say.
    * Describe what you need with as few terms as possible. The goal of each word in a query is to focus it further. Since all words are used, each additional word limits the results. If you limit too much, you will miss a lot of useful information. The main advantage to starting with fewer keywords is that, if you don't get what you need, the results will likely give you a good indication of what additional words are needed to refine your results on the next search. For example, [ weather cancun ] is a simple way to find the weather and it is likely to give better results than the longer [ weather report for cancun mexico ].
    * Choose descriptive words. The more unique the word is the more likely you are to get relevant results. Words that are not very descriptive, like 'document,' 'website,' 'company,' or 'info,' are usually not needed. Keep in mind, however, that even if the word has the correct meaning but it is not the one most people use, it may not match the pages you need. For example, [ celebrity ringtones ] is more descriptive and specific than [ celebrity sounds ].
