Speed up gnome

I use Ubuntu and gnome as my default desktop environment. Gnome is a greate desktop envirnoment but for those who have less memory gnome run slow on them. there are some way to speed up gnome. Just issue the following commands.

sudo gconf-editor /apps/nautilus/preferences
When that comes up.. uncheck the show_desktop box

This will stop nautilus file browser to manage the icons on your desktop.
Still, if you really need the icon back, then you can go for a light weight desktop environment like xfce and install the xfdesktop4.

sudo apt-get install xfdesktop4

I more way to speed up things is to configure the sysctl file. Open the terminal and issue the following command.

sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf

After you open this file just add the lines to your file

vm.swappiness=10

If this works with your computer, then you will see improvement in your system after reboot.

I have been looking for something like this. If you know more about speeding up the gnome deskotp envirnoment then please do post. I had heard that there is also an option for creating metacity faster for which you have to make use of the lesser resources. I am not sure this works because i have not tried it. Still if you know anything about it, please do post. Thanks for the post.

If you want to make the windows acquire less resources, I mean to make the moving windows around less demanding on your computer resources. You can try this command. This works with my computer and operating system. hopefully this will work with you guys. Just issue the following command

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/reduced_resources true

After setting this the windows will act as a wire frame when you will try to move them.

Awesome, I did not knew that before. If you guys want to try a light weight desktop environment then you should try the Open box. It can not be used as a high themes or something like that, but it does everything as like the gnome desktop envirnoment and acts as a windows manager for the gnome.
