Under Vista, the "Previous Versions" which is in the properties of an element (file or folder) to restore this item to a later date. This uses essentially the shadow generated by the system and the backup on your Vista.
The service is also for XP, but especially on Vista Shadow consume considerable disk space. If you feel no need for you, then you can disable it by following these steps.
Disable shadow
- Go to the Start menu and type services.msc in the search bar and then click OK.
- Make a double click on the "Volume Shadow."
- Change the startup type to "Manual" (not "Off" or System Restore will not work).
- Click "Stop"
- Go to the tab "Recovery"
- Make sure all three options "First, second and third failure" are on "Do Nothing".
- Validate by clicking on "OK"
