When you do not see extensions, an infected file may seem harmless, for example, a simple image (. Jpg). It may well be in fact an executable file (. Exe) or otherwise. By displaying the extensions, you find more easily.

For the same reason it may be useful to show hidden files but beware: These cookies may be important system files. Never remove them without ascertaining their utility.

To view extensions

Simple solution
  • Open the Explorer (to open a folder or My Computer, for example).
  • Under XP, go to the Tools menu and select "Folder Options"
  • Under Vista, go to the menu "Hold" and choose "Folder Options and research"
  • Choose the "View"
  • Uncheck "Hide extensions for file types known."

Solution with the Registry

  • Open the Registry Editor
  • Open: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced."
  • Create (or edit) a new string value and name it "HideFileExt."
  • Set it to "0".

To view files and folders hidden

In the same way as for extensions, open the "Explorer" and choose "Folder Options" then "View" tab.

This time, check "Show hidden files and folders."

To view files and folders system

Also in the Folder Options, make sure the box "Hide protected operating system" is unchecked.
