Mozilla Firefox OS for Smartphones Announced

On the eve of the opening of the Mobile World Congress, the Mozilla Foundation has officially kicked-off its new Firefox OS for mobile and announced a slew of partnerships.

Initially unveiled under the name "Boot2Gecko" in February 2012, the operating system of Mozilla is now completed. For this OS, the foundation was put on web technologies. The idea is to remove the system software layer to communicate directly with the web applications of the phone. To do this, it uses several Mozilla programming interfaces for accessing the camera, the internal storage or the accelerometer.

Mozilla says that the first devices with Firefox OS will be launched by the operator Telefonica in mid-2013 in Brazil, Colombia, Spain and Venezuela. These will be manufactured by ZTE and Alcatel as well. Also note that they will have all of the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. In February 2012, Mozilla announced that it had signed an agreement with Telefonica. The mobile operator is currently in discussions with the Chinese manufacturer Huawei to conduct performance tests.

In addition to Telefonica, smartphones will be sold by Deutsche Telekom. The operator has announced the phone including Alcatel One Touch Fire which will be distributed in Poland this summer. The first phones will appear in the second half of 2013.

Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla, is pleased to have signed with 17 key operators in total: América Móvil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefónica, Telenor, VimpelCom and TMN.

In general, operators have expressed full support for the initiative of Mozilla, as the new OS is open source, and free variable. Through this network operators many people will be able to adapt to it without any problems running for their needs, adding software and services. According to developers, device users will like this because they will be able to work on it quickly, providing full access to the network, and integration with network applications.
