Details of keyconfig 20110522 extension for Firefox browsers.

I was browsing for extensions for my Mozilla Firefox. In the list of extensions I came across an extension by name ‘keyconfig’. It didn’t have much of description about it. Can anyone tell me what exactly keyconfig is?

Keyconfig is an extension for browsers by Mozilla like Firefox, Safari and Sea Monkey. This extender allows user to modify or define new shortcuts for the browsers. The shortcuts can be edited only for those functions which have a command or oncommand attribute. To access keyconfig, go in tools where you will find the extension.

All shortcuts are related to application or extensions. Keyconfig only edits those keys which are recognized by Gecko. Editing a shortcut doesn’t remove the original shortcut. You can always restore the previous shortcuts if needed. Default modifiers can be configured ny editing ui.key* preferences in auto:config. In Mac you can’t edit shortcuts for menu items. After editing or creating new shortcut, you need to restart your browser.

Following are some types of shortcuts that are available for editing in keycofig,

• URL Suffix: URL ctrl/shift/ctrl+shift behavior
• Keyfixer: platformHTMLBindings.xml [Mac]
• SEARCHHOTKEYS: Find As You Type Link (') & Find As You Type Text (/)
• KeySnail: Key sequences, Emacs behavior
• Vimperator: Vim behavior
• MenuManipulator: Menu accesskeys

Some of the changes that are made in keyconfig 20110522 are,
i) keyconfig does not depend on other extensions for shortcuts and commands.
ii) Auto detects shortcuts for keys using broadcaster.
iii) Some translations have been updated.
iv) A shortcut disabling tool has also been installed. One doesn’t have to restore defaults everytime, but only disable till required.

It also has toolkit 2.o, it has updated XPCOM components. It will now work in a tab. Color schemes for type of shortcuts have been improved. One can use a key name multiple times. Space bar key will now be recognized as <VK_SPACE>.Disabled shortcuts will now be displayed as disabled. The disabled shortcut keys won’t be deleted from the documents, but will be kept for further use in future.

The first priority of the keyconfig will now be of adding new keys. The popup and menu pops have been improved. The keytext of a modified key will be removed. Changes will be applied to the open window immediately. Due to this, there will be no warning s everytime a shortcut is removed. The data will be saved in compressed jar file.
