    DNS issue accessing external website

I cannot access our external website from an internal computer.

    Here are the facts:
    1. We have a network called cartersloope.local
    2. Our external website (www.cartersloope.com) is hosted by another company.
    3. I did an ip search on the website and got 74.53.93.18
    4. I ping cartersloope.com from an internal machine and get 74.53.93.18
    5. I go to internet explorer from an internal or external machine, type the ip address and get a "file not found" error.
    6. I go to internet explorer from an internal machine, type www.cartersloope.com and get a "file not found" error.
    7. I would expect to add the a host www. and point it to the ip address in my forward lookup zone. This does not work.

    Please help

Re: DNS issue accessing external website

When clients on your internal network ask your Active Directory DNS server for a lookup on example.com it is going to direct them to one of your domain controllers. The solution would be to maintain two distinct DNS zones that represent your namespace to internal and external clients, one on internal DNS servers and the other one on external DNS servers. If you request ”www.cartersloope.com” and you happen to have IIS running on one of those domain controllers you will see whatever the default website that is running on that server. For more information on the above issue, you can check out the following link.

Hope so it may resolve your above issue.

I don't think this is really answering my question. Two of those articles are about hosting your own site internally, and one is about using a proxy server.

Also, I only have one DNS server, which is the same as the domain controller, with IIS on it.
