How to get a free Genuine Microsoft Validation

One of my cousin is using Windows XP that is i think not a genuine copy coz it gives a message on the logon screen. I have heard some where that we can get the genuine Microsoft validation for free. If its true than please let me know how to do that ? Thanks in advance.
