Vista can ping DNS/websites but cannot browse them online

Basically, I am not able to browse any site on the internet. I get 'page not found' for all the sites. However, if I try to ping the websites from the command prompt, the ping requests are shown successful and packets received are 100%. I also tried to ping my DNS (primary and secondary both) and they are also proper. Is this the problem with the browser? I have tried with IE7 and Chrome so far. Both having the same issues.

Have you changed any settings in the router or reset the router and reconfigured it? Check all the settings of the router.
Also, try browsing with firefox or opera.

I dont think the problem will be the router. I had resetted the router earlier but then all the settings were done as before. Moreover, the router with same settings works well with another desktop which is XP but has problems with this Vista laptop only.

Ping any site for example google.com and copy the IP address. See if you can open it in the browser with that IP. If you can, then its definitely DNS related issue. If you cant, then it isn't a DNS problem. I realize that DNS should be working fine if you can actually ping using the name google.com... but lets see if it loads in the browser by IP.

Did this machine ever had a different Firewall or AV or Security Suite installed? If yes, what was the name? Sounds like a firewall might still be active and blocking you even though you believe it to be uninstalled or disabled.

Look at these related problems asked earlier,
Can connect to router but not to internet?

Thanks for your answer, I didn't use different firewall or any Security Suite, but Nortan antivirus. Had uninstalled that one before but with no effect.
I did a complete restore of the system in the meantime. Took me just 1 hours... but now I'm fine again.
