Go to Start->Open the Control Panel->click on System icon. Click on either Advanced System Settings in the left column, you would see at right hand bottom corner for the UAC prompt, Click Continue for the UAC prompt.Click on the Computer Name tab, then click on the Change button. In the second half of the computer name you will find the workgroup name mentioned your name there and click OK have you followed this steps correctly then i think you wont get any problem there on. One more to take the immediate effects you need to Click on Restart Now.After the restart, you can go back to step 2 and verify the new workgroup name.

You need to keep in mind certain things while assigning workgroup name:

    • You need to ensure your workgroup or domain name should not be longer than 15 characters.
    • Ensure that name your are assigning to your workgroup or domain name does not contains any spaces. and if you are using Windows ME and earlier versions of Windows do not support workgroups or domains with spaces in their name this may also take away from what you wanted to achieve.
    • Ensure that when you assign the name to your workgroup/domain should be different from the name of any computer on that network.
