windows mail is 100% compatible with gmail just follow the following steps:

start first by activating the transfer of pop in gmail

Then and only then, you enter the options as follows:

Incoming mail server (POP3) - requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587

    SOLUTION:
    Cause: IMAP settings are wrong.

    Use the following setting.

    Go to: tools

    Go to: accounts

Go to: IMAP and deselect "store special folders on IMAP server"

I was having the same exact problem as you all, and when browsing across the Internet... came across this board, and found it completely useless in solving the suggested problem.

In response to the "0x800CCCD2" error...

"I was having the same issue and I think I resolved it. WLM was crashing
randomly then after a few hours it happened everytime I started the program.
Since we have 3 computers all with Windows Live Mail and 2 were working
perfectly I was able to compare settings between them. The offending one had
different security settings than the other 2.

I went to: Tools > Safety Options > Security and set Virus Protection to
"Internet zone" & "Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me."
These are the only 2 selections turned on."

Taken from "BP Murphy" off of
    http://www.vistax64.com/live-mail/14...-problems.html

I tried the Microsoft solution that was asking me to install SP2 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 off of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309216, but it wouldn't let me install because it's an upgrade and I don't use any software like that.

And... BP Muiphy's solution actually worked for me.
