Gmail mail Access in mac mail :IMAP

hi i have mail account in gmail.i am using mac os x i am looking to transfer my emails from gmail to mac mail because i feel If due to any reason, or technical incident at gmail account get mess up, or database truncated empty then i have nothing more .so please can any one tell me how to POP email archive from gmail also tell me about IMAP .thank you.

yes you can transfer your gmail mails with IMAP.IMAP, or Internet Message Access Protocol, lets you download messages from Gmail's servers onto your computer so you can access your mail with a program like Microsoft Outlook Express or Apple Mail, even when you aren't connected to the Internet.

To access a Gmail account in your email program or mobile device via the IMAP interface:

* Choose Settings from the top Gmail navigation bar.
* Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
* Make sure Enable IMAP is selected under IMAP Access:.
* Click Save Changes.
