ERROR CODE 46-NPQE: This is an AOL connectivity code. This repair was simple for me and worked well. Go to add/remove programs, select AOL Connectivity, change/remove, then select repair, make sure you are closed out of AOL software before starting.

Reboot Your Computer, Phone Line and Router, and Check the Physical Connections

Restarting your computer and resetting your connection hardware will help your computer get a better connection. Also, if the hardware is not plugged in correctly, you will not be able connect to the AOL service.

To restart your computer, modem and router:
    1. Shut down your computer:

      • If using Windows 2000 or 98/ME, click the Start button, then click Shut Down. Click the What do you want your computer to do? drop-down menu, click Shut Down to select it, then click the OK button.
      • If using Windows XP Home Edition, click the Start button, then click Turn Off Computer. Click Turn Off.

    2. If you use an external modem, and router, unplug the power cord from these devices.
    3. Wait for 30 seconds.
    4. If you use an external modem, plug the power cord in to your cable, DSL or dial-up modem.
    5. If you have a router, plug the power cord in to your router.
    6. Turn on your computer.

To check the phone line and physical connections with a cable modem:
    1. Verify the coaxial cable is properly connected to the modem and the wall.

To check the phone line and physical connections with a DSL modem:
    1. Check for a dial tone with another phone in the house that uses the same phone number as the computer.

Note: If there is no dial tone on the phone line, please report the problem to your local phone company.

    • Verify the phone cord is properly connected to the modem and the phone jack.
    • If you are using an external modem, verify the Ethernet or USB cable is correctly connected between the computer and the DSL modem.
    • Test the phone cord running to the modem by plugging it into a phone and checking for a dial tone.

Note: If there is no dial tone using this phone cord, please try another phone cord.

To check the phone line and physical connections with a dial-up modem:
    1. Check for a dial tone with another phone in the house that uses the same phone number as the computer.

Note: If there is no dial tone on the phone line, please report the problem to your local phone company.
    2. Verify the phone cord is properly connected to the modem and the phone jack.
    3. Test the phone line running to the modem by plugging it into a phone and checking for a dial tone.

Disable the Firewall and Connect to the AOL Service

If firewall software is installed on the computer, you should temporarily disable it, then try to see if you can sign on.

    Notes:
    • Once firewall is disabled, your computer will not be protected. It is recommended that you enable the firewall again as soon as possible. If you need to allow the AOL software access in your firewall software, please contact the firewall software manufacturer.
    • If you are unsure of how to disable your firewall, please refer to the firewall documentation or contact the software manufacturer for support.
    • If you have recently uninstalled the ZoneAlarm® software, please reinstall the ZoneAlarm software and set the security level to medium.
