The laboratory of Microsoft Live Labs has launched a new web service called thumbtacks. What is it? Thumbtacks is a virtual notepad on which it is possible to store different types of content (text, links, photos ... etc) by simply copying and pasting.
Several tools exist already including Google Notepad, which proposes an extension to facilitate the management of notes or EverNote offers a solution with synchronization software installed on the machine.
Thumbtacks offers a bookmarklet to add to the Favorites bar to record the broadcast content of a web page to put in a collection dedicated and to associate one or more specific keywords.
Thumbtacks differs from other services through the management of metadata through several gadgets. Thus it possible to install a small module based programming interface for Virtual Earth that automatically locate an address in a note. Thumbtacks can also share their notes with another user or send them via email.
However once again Microsoft has focused its Internet Explorer browser functionality and some of the web service does not work with Firefox.
If it proves popular, the organizer thumbtacks could probably integrate the family of Live products.
