Phar archives are actually a convenient way to group several files into one. Thus, a phar archive can distribute a complete PHP application in a single file and run it from the file without extracting it to disk. Moreover, phar archives can be executed by PHP as easily as any other file, both in command line via a web server. Phar is kind of USB key for PHP applications.
