Best method to backup my files/photos

Hi friends, i need some advice regarding back up of my files and photos from my pc .I start to use discs for the photos but it will take a long time. should i use use memory stick or an external hard drive ? In either case which is the best make at reasonable cost. My computers hard drive capacity is 40gb out of which 10gb is unused.

any help will be highly appreciated ?

    Thanks for the reply,
I am using windows xp , and use the 'copy to cd' option within 'my pictures'. Part of the problem is that I have about 55 folders with an average size of 260mb. I am copying to Memorex 700mb CD-RWs. It just seems that the copy process is very long winded. CDs are a safer back up than external hard drive? If so which are best and can I get them bigger than 700mb?
