SBS 2008 Remote Desktop (RDP) XP Client (Solved)

Hey friends, today am not here to ask any question but to provide some tips for accessing Windows XP workstations over VPN with SBS 2008. There might be some another way as well but remember this it to access over VPN and not via RWW. I was trying to get it done and I finally managed to access, hence thought to share. So here is what I did:

    • Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Group Policy Management > Group Policy Management + Forest + Domains + Your Domain Name + Group Policy Objects + Windows SBS Clients * Windows XP Policy
    • Right Click Edit. This will open Group Policy Management Editor.
    • Windows SBS Client - Windows XP Policy [SBS Name] + Computer Configuration + Policies + Administrative Templates: Policy definitions (ADMX files) retrieved from the local machine + Network Connections + Windows Firewall + Domain Profile
    • In the right hand panel Double click on Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote Desktop exceptions
    • Add your Network (see instructions there in)
    • Reboot the XP machine.

    That’s it. Hope it helps.

I don’t understood why you need to edit it. It can be done without editing as well. BTW, are you using wizards and http://connect to connect PC's to the Domain?

Rick is spot on with this, the clue was right at the start of the post.

This setting is enabled by default in the policy editor, but only applies to the local subnet. Anyone attempting to use RDP to a workstation on a 2008 server via a VPN that uses a different subnet will be denied access.

You need to add your remote subnet to the policy to grant access.
