I am having 3 500GB hard drives configured Raid 5 in SBS 2003, one of the disk is failing so I had replaced the failed one with new one, now its rebuilding on windows, but its already been 26 hours and only 33% completed, so is this thing normal, or is there anything that we can do to make the process faster? Thanks for any information.

I did this thing with Raid 5 rebuild that was many years ago, with an array of 4x9gb drives. It usually took about 20 minutes to rebuild at the bios level, that is, the server was offline. I can expect rebuilding 500gb online, with SBS up and running and under active load, to be a slow process. I dont know whether there is anything that you can safely do, but I would suggest you to the Raid controller documentation.

I was having 150GB Raid5 that took 2 days. I want to say that this is normal and that you just have to wait. Your Raid Controller documentation that will not tell you anything to speed this process up. It is not necessarily correct. Some controllers will allow you to change the rebuild priority on the go. My HP, for instance, lets me configure high priority rebuilds during off hours, and slower rebuilds during business hours. I just plug in the times for when I want higher and lower priority.

Re: RAID failure - how to rebuild?

Try getway raid recovery software. It can help you solve many of the raid common failtures.

I think you should increase your computer memory to make it run faster. Raid 5 doesn't take so much time to complete the process.
