    SBS 2008 recommended backup device?

I’m planning to buy Dell RD1000/Imation RDX box to install SBS 2008 but am bit confused whether it can Server will recognize this as a backup drive. We could buy one as a test, but only have SBS 2008 on a VM at the moment. Earlier we have used LTO2 and are happy with the same but I would like to go with the inbuilt SBS backup for many clients who don't really need backup exec.

Can anyone here suggest me better backups? Another solution that comes to my mind is a portable 2.5 inch HDDs is it good in this case? Please advice.

I don’t know about SBS 2008 but Dell RD1000 wasn’t completely supported with SBS 2003. I have a small experience of this. So I don’t think they might have done hard work for making full support for SBS 2008. As far as Hard drives are concerned, External Drives with their own power supply are probably better than the 2.5 drives. Hope you got what I’m saying.

I have read somewhere that Backupassist claimed that their next version will have support for RD1000 /RDX with SBS 2008 backup. If am not wrong they have already released the beta version which you can test if you want. I must say that though it is not free but it is cheaper than a tape drive and software especially if you already have an investment in the RD1000 / RDX.

Both the rdx and REV drives are not suported by the SBS 2008 backup wizard, but 3rd party software like BackupAssist will support these devices.

    http://www.backupassist.com/blog/sup...ev-rdx-drives/

The gotcha with REV and rdx drives is that they only support one backup per device, plus you can only restore entire volumes or an entire system.

If you're comfortable with these limitations, then it would be safe to use the REV and rdx drives. However, if not, then stick to the external HDDs. The latest 2.5" 320 gig devices are very good. We've been using 160gig drives as our backup device for over a year, swapping them daily, and none have broken on us. Very portable too.
