2007 Laptop Reviews - Acer, Fujitusu, Toshiba, Sony Vaio, Dell, Asus, Apple

    Introduction

A sign of the times? The laptop on the move and there are many manufacturers who are trying to break into this promising market. As a result of this craze: the references are multiplying and it becomes very difficult to identify the machine of your dreams or, at least, the one that offers the best value for money on a given segment of the offer. This guide is designed to help you become aware of the criteria for choosing a laptop and suggest some models identified by our staff as leaving the lot.

As always, it is better to have a clear idea of their real needs before embarking on the purchase of a laptop.I realize latter in a state of mobility or will it be intended to replace a desktop? Am I enjoying to the joys of video and 3D modeling myself or I surf the web and send emails? Am I a player or an inveterate supporter of design?

Which format & for what purpose?

One class ships laptops based on their footprint in three categories. The "ultra-portable" First of all, generally meet the machines whose diagonal screen displays a less than or equal to 12 inches, and weighing less than 2 kg. They are intended, of course, to followers of mobility, who are considering moving or almost daily with their working environment. Initially reserved for professionals, the ultra-portable seduce now that the general public appreciates the opportunity to work or watch a movie in good conditions without all of a large briefcase. If the first ultra-portable now trades below a thousand dollars, this segment remains the flagship of manufacturers who combine edge technology for the machines ... Much less affordable.

Then there are "portable", the bulk of the market, with computers varying in size from 13 to 17 inches. They typically weighing between 2.5 and 4 kilograms autonomy over two hours and satisfactory performances, it is no longer necessary to sacrifice for miniaturisation. Here, the supply is bloated. Once the size of your dreams determined, it will do more than adjust the level of equipment and the quality of finishing that fit your budget. The player will leave such a machine equipped with a dedicated graphics card and a fast hard drive, while the professional will perhaps seek technology dedicated to the protection of personal data.

With screen sizes ranging from 17 today and 21 inches, "transportable" notebooks have the name, as some accuse machines until seven or eight kilograms on the scale.Of course it is possible to move with such computers, just as it can be fastened office tower on the back ... But it is difficult to talk about mobility. Having to replace a PC or fixed to take place in a chat room, these machines generally have a high level of equipment, for example, it is not uncommon to find configurations with a pair of hard drives mounted RAID .

CPU, graphics card, hard disk ... The key elements

Unlike a PC fixed, it is always possible to open and edit, a laptop must be understood as a whole. While it is possible to increase the storage capacity or upgrade to a new hard drive faster, but it generally keeps her laptop in the original condition. Therefore, both directly target the configuration that suits us.

As for the processors, the trend is clear to the Core 2 Duo Intel, present in all manufacturers at the expense of AMD solutions which are confined to machines entry level. If we take care not to be moving towards a product now obsolete as a Celeron, the processor is only rarely the limiting factor on a laptop, unless you have a fairly pushed usage of the machine. In terms of memory, there are few manufacturers who still offer machines with only 512 MB. The gigabyte became the standard, and more and more computers now boarded 2 GB default. Simply put, it is quite possible to be content with 1 gigabyte use, but the presence of a 2nd Gb brings a comfort that is not superfluous in good number of cases, particularly when practice to use multiple applications simultaneously. The manufacturers incorporate increasingly 3, or 4 GB of RAM on their high-end chassis.

Most of the machines for entry and mid-range boarded an integrated graphics chipset on the motherboard.Quite capable of handling 2D displays and multimedia, these controllers are proving absolutely unable to run a new video game in decent conditions or take charge decompression flow high definition. For those put off by the game, the question does not arise, but for others, it will consider purchasing a machine equipped with a dedicated graphics card, logically signed nVidia or ATI.

Now, almost all the machines are equipped with a WiFi wireless connectivity, and even Bluetooth, as well as a memory card reader, a TV output or USB 2.0 ports. Unless you are using a particular card format, these criteria should therefore not specifically taken into account in choosing a machine. In contrast, hard disk performance can be important. In order not to encumber the autonomy of their machines - and reduce costs, manufacturers often opt for hard disks 4200 revolutions per minute, but that have low flow issue fairly narrow, which can slow down application performance heavy. As a general rule, considering that hard disks 5400 tours offer satisfactory performances, but some may prefer to turn to models 7200 tours.

    Autonomy, ease of use, design?

Last criteria, and not least, autonomy, the ease of use and design. Autonomy would depend greatly on the type of machine restraint and your budget. There is a saying that the machines have a transportable self approximately two hours. The laptops, 13 to 17 inches, are most often autonomy between two and four hours. Finally, the ultra-capable laptops are bad but not the best. The machines sold thousand euros merely usually three or four hours of use but in the high-end computers that combine a battery six or nine cell technologies as little taste LED screens, sometimes up to seven or eight hours of real autonomy.

If we can easily agree on the innovative nature of the design of a machine, it is impossible to assess in an objective manner the appearance of a computer. On the other hand, you can stop on comfort, which is particularly relevant to things like the keyboard, touchpad or location of the various ports, or on the quality of the materials used.

These elements are often those who make the difference in the age of choice. Understand that a laptop is not confined to a stack of components that it is sufficient to analyze the performance machine to determine which provides the best value for money. Some manufacturers are able to enter the market of mobile phones, which charged less than Rs. 57000, exhibit characteristics similar techniques to other sold more than Rs. 74100 in a competing firm. These products do not receive a comparable level of finishing and some elements, such as LCD panels, may have been left to chance in order to cut corners. Therefore, a portable as a whole whose parts should not be neglected and they prefer the machine with a harmonious configuration to the one on which a point of detail was put forward at the expense of the rest.

    And the guarantee?

Finally, we can not overemphasize advise you inquire of the conditions under which the guarantee applies to the dealer and the manufacturer of the machine you are going to buy. Some, like Asus, for example, a practising systematic guarantee of two years on their laptops.Toshiba has introduced later in 2007 a security breach "screen" for one year, which authorizes the free replacement of a slab in the event of an accident. Some are particularly renowned for the quality of their after-sales service, while in others, return management seriously leaves to be desired. Arguments that could help you stop your final choice once the first selection.

    Computers versatile - small budgets

A time reserved for professionals or wealthy individuals, the laptop is now an object of consumption, and are now a complete engine from about appox. Rs. 22800. Note that this selection, carried out from our personal assessments and reviews conducted by some of our colleagues, is a simple guide to aid for the purchase, not an in-depth analysis of the machines presented. We begin with a few machines economic demonstrating that it is now possible to equip a laptop suitable for a price between Rs. 28500 and Rs. 45600. In this range, all machines generally have a 15.4-inch screen. We also realize this selection machines with less than 1 GB of memory or processor obsolete, in order to ensure a satisfactory level of performance, at least for applications such as small office and the surf under a system of Operating relatively heavy as Windows Vista.

If you wish to remain below 500 euros, prefer a machine equipped with an AMD Sempron to the few models that still offer a Celeron, and make sure you have at least 1 GB of RAM.

    Acer Aspire 5720GZ

The Taiwanese Acer machines are not the best or most finished, but it is clear that the manufacturer is able to maintain a report equipment prices. This is a first: we open this buying guide with a machine equipped with a double heart processor, 2 GB of RAM, a hard disk of 160 GB and a dedicated graphics card compatible DirectX 10, all of which are available online for less than appox. Rs. 34200, including shipping and handling. Difficult, if not impossible, to find such a high level of equipment at this price among competitors from Acer. If you appreciate the GeForce 8400M and 2 GB of RAM, it is unfortunate that the processor can be a double heart Pentium (T2310 at 1.46 GHz).

Finishing and design have nothing exceptional, but let us not forget the price segment in which one finds oneself. The Aspire 5720GZ based on the design Gemstone, Acer introduced by the beginning of 2007 with an interior hue and a ceramic top shell blue night. Connection is quite satisfactory with, among others, four USB 2.0 ports, an exit-S-Video and an 802.11g WiFi. A DVD burner, a 0.3 megapixel camera and a family premium edition complete the picture. Despite a battery of six cells, the autonomy of this model will be limited to about two hours, and we would we complain about this price segment.

    Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 2515-B5210

The need for a dedicated graphics card does finally feel that when contemplating to engage in some very specific tasks, including of course, there are video games, and it may prefer to opt for a dedicated graphics controller integrated chipset to be off, for example, a slightly faster processor. In this scenario, the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 2515 is an interesting choice. For appox. Rs. 37500, it will provide a processor Core 2 Duo T5250 running at 1.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and a 160 Gb hard disk, mounted in a chassis 15.4 inches to Slab brilliant 1280 x 800 pixels.

DVD, WiFi and memory card reader that computer equipped with Windows Vista family premium edition. The graph is in turn secured by an Intel GMA X3100 which, if it delivers performances below a dedicated graphics card, also has a slightly lower power consumption. Unlike Acer, which has decided to equip all its machines general public of a particular design, Fujitsu-Siemens opts here for a very sober chassis, finishing correct.

    Toshiba Satellite A200-1VD

Raising the Toshiba A200 series with this model, which offers a rather homogeneous for about appox. Rs. 45600 : Core 2 Duo T 5250, 2 GB of memory and 250 gigabytes of hard drive accompanied by a dedicated graphics card Radeon AMD HD2400. This portable 15.4 inches offers a good basis both for professional use only for multimedia entertainment, even if the graphics card will soon reveal its limitations in terms of performance. Like all A200 models, the machine has a set its relatively correct, a point that should be highlighted to the extent that the forums are often the weak point of laptops.

Four USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, a FireWire port and an S-Video up the bulk of the connections. The 802.11g WiFi is logically from the party, just like the multi-DVD formats for a host of 2.75 kg, slightly more expensive than the Acer model mentioned above, but with a processor based on an architecture more interesting and with a chassis that finishing paraitra perhaps higher.

Computers versatile - from Rs. 51300 to Rs. 68400

When it comes to laptops, the bulk of the demand is focused on machines whose prices fluctuate at around appox. Rs. 57000. So we decided to this section to make a selection of computers, whose prices range from approximately Rs. 51300 to Rs. 68400, focusing once again on the format king, the 15.4-inch model and 17-inch ultraportables being dedicated to a selection. Two machines this selection will allow you to have a high-definition optical drive.

    Toshiba Satellite A200-12S

For a sum of just over Rs. 57000, it is easy to find a laptop 15.4 inches or 17 inches with a processor type Core 2 Duo, 2 GB of RAM, a relatively high-performance graphics card and at least 200 gigabytes of hard drive. The size of the LCD panels and the fact preference graphics card, hard disk or on the contrary set of quality speakers depend on the aspirations of everyone.

Toshiba had decided to pull the rope in prices and generalize HD DVD players on its laptops in order to promote its high-definition optical format, therefore propose here a machine able to read these disks of 15 or 30 GB for a price lower than Rs. 57000. An HDMI output enable streaming video through a High-Definition TV since the integrated LCD panels is limited to a resolution of 1280x800.

    Apple MacBook

In good progress on the market for laptops, Apple has recently released Leopard, the latest version of its operating system, which gives an additional attraction to computers MacBook. The price of the latter remain relatively high in relation to the components they boarded - equivalent to PC - but the needs are not necessarily the same as Windows and, most importantly, it buys an environment, a brand and a finish particularly emblematic of the Apple brand.

Proposed from Rs. 57000, the white MacBook benefits since the last refresh a range of processor Core 2 Duo 2 GHz with 1 GB of memory, a hard drive with 80 GB and a .. . DVD combo CD burner, at a time when the burner is now standard on every PC at $ 500, applies to some criticism of Apple felt on the part of its detractors. The idea here is obviously to encourage consumers to spend on the best model, which has, for its part, a 2.2 GHz processor, a DVD burner and a hard drive of 120 GB, for about appox. Rs. 71250. The different declinations MacBook boarded a slab of 13.3 inches displaying a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

    Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21E

Laptops signed Sony are generally fine machinery, finishing touches, but they do not always carry a price optimal performance. With this Vaio VGN-FZ21E, the Japanese manufacturer is able to offer a configuration of the most honourable in a sober frame for a price slightly higher than appox. Rs. 62700. And if Toshiba party seems to try to democratize the HD DVD, Sony is not lagging behind since this model incorporates a Blu-ray, together again one HDMI output. The graphics card, a 8400M GT, will not be suitable for gamers, and will decompress the video stream high definition.

The 15.4-inch screen adopts a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which makes it very readable, but does not permit the display of a large amount of information, or broadcast in full HD. Some prefer now looking slabs displaying higher resolutions, especially if they use their laptop as part of their work graphic designer or developer. In addition to the GeForce 8400M GT, the Vaio has an Intel Core 2 Duo T7250, 2 GB of RAM and a hard disk of 200 GB. It also loads 802.11g WiFi controller and 1.3 megapixel camera, with a weight of 2.8 Kg .

Prices of Sony VAIO VGN-FZ21E (from appox. Rs. 68900)

    14 inches: Asus F8SV-4S036C

The 15.4-inch format is still the bulk of sales, but the smaller sizes are of interest growing in the eyes of the general public who discovers the joys of mobile computing. As such, the 14-inch is an interesting compromise between portability and ease of use, and the stripe does not necessarily have to make compromises on performance as we watch this model signed Asus.

For less than Rs. 68400, it has indeed here a configuration to suit a player F8SV Asus since it has a dedicated graphics card, a GeForce 8600M GT with 256 MB of dedicated memory. The processor is a Core 2 Duo T7500, running at 2.2 GHz, with 2 GB of RAM, a 160 Gb hard disk, a DVD multi-format and an LCD panels displaying a resolution 1440 x 900 pixels, perhaps most interesting for fans of detail that the 1280 x 800 models that can be found on most of 15.4 inches. We appreciate the move and the mouse bag supplied by Asus with her laptop, as well as the integrated fingerprint reader at the touchpad and 1.3 megapixel camera.

    The Transportable: 17 inches

The general public is showing an increasingly popular high for laptops with a diagonal screen reaches or exceeds 17 inches. These machines, which generally exceeds the weight 3.5 kg, are intended for home use only mobility. In addition to their large screen, usually associated with important resolutions, those computers often have interesting configurations in terms of performance are therefore to tasks such as multimedia or video games. Because of their size, these machines are often called "desktop replacement" (replace a desktop PC) and actually present an alternative to the traditional PC fixed. Needless to say, autonomy is not their strong point ... Although the initial price is about Rs. 34200 for 17-inch notebooks, we chose to start here at around Rs. 45600, with a model equipped with an AMD processor.

    Acer Aspire 7520G-502G32Mi

With this Aspire 5720G will be available for a little over appox. Rs. 45600 a machine equipped with an AMD Turion X2 TL-60, 2 GB of RAM, 320 GB of storage and a card nVidia GeForce 8400M GS. The 17-inch screen has a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels, and offers a glossy coating. The processor does not delight the most demanding users, but combined with two hard drives with 160 GB, a good amount of RAM and a dedicated graphics card, it gives the Aspire 7520G a certain homogeneity in terms of performance. The machine comes with Windows Vista Home Premium.

On the side of the connector, the equipment is correct with four USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire port, a card reader 5 in 1 and S-Video output. However, we regret the lack of HDMI output, Bluetooth or WiFi controller 802.11n. The weight is 3.36 kg, which is reasonable for a 17-inch. The autonomy on the other hand should be quite limited: no more than two hours in power saving mode.

Price of Acer Aspire 502G32Mi-7520G (from appox. Rs. 48100)

    Dell Inspiron 1720

Ascending in line with the Dell Inspiron 1720, a 17-inch chassis that are able to select the colors during configuration on the website of the manufacturer. For a sum of approximately Rs. 57000, it will be offered in a basic configuration machine Core 2 Duo, 2 GB of RAM and two hard drives with 160 GB for a total storage capacity of 320 GB DVD, GeForce graphics card 8600M GT six cells and batteries are also offered as standard. Free to the buyer to leave then on a warranty upgrade, a faster processor or a larger amount of memory in order to have a more powerful machine. The 17-inch chassis launched at the end of the first half appears to use relatively robust, with a soft touch and a nice touchpad correct.

Prices of Dell Inspiron 1720 (from product unavailable)

    Apple 17-inch MacBook Pro

The MacBook Pro is an expensive machine, but there are many who think that the price is very much based in the light of the quality of services offered by Apple. Fine, elegant, the MacBook Pro offers an exemplary standard of finishes, a wide touchpad, a comfortable keyboard and backlit screen and a light that for many justify the investment. Here, the setup is much more interesting than the MacBook mentioned above, since there is an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, a dedicated graphics card in the form of an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, a controller 802.11n WiFi, as well as Firewire ports 400 and 800 and a DVD-type slot-in, without extracting drawer.

One of the main forces MacBook Pro finally comes perhaps from its operating system, Mac OS X "Leopard", which is an alternative to the not inconsiderable now hardly avoidable Windows Vista. Note that the MacBook Pro comes with iLife 08 (which includes iDVD, iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band and iWeb, respectively, the DVD creation, management of photo, video creation, creation music and web design).

Prices of 17-inch MacBook Pro (from appox. Rs. 148400)

    Hey Urgent Help

It was an interseting and very informative topic.

Seeing your knowledge I need your help.

About a month back I purchased this Compaq A993TU Notebook with Vista Home Pre-installed.
Frankly I had gone to buy a Dell with XP preloaded, but fell for this Compaq 17 Inch screen space, decent config and good keyboard layout.
Also felt Dell 15' keyboard was a bit cramped on space.

While buying I thought that first thing I would do is switch Vista with XP.

But now I am doomed as HP guys say they don't support XP on this model and I am unable to find suitable drivers for it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

(PS.: I don’t want to run XP with emulator)
