WSUS: Very slow download from Updates from Microsoft

    Hello

By Testing the new WSUS on a new installed machine the updates have to be downloaded from Microsoft through the internet.

This is very, very slow. In three days there are only 1.100 MB down. 10.000 MB left...

Have i forgotten some options or are the responsible Microsoft-Download-Servers permanently overload by a lot of much, much users?

I installed the SUS months ago on another machine. It downloaded the updates very fast.

Server Software is on both machines a Windows 2000 Server.

    Any ideas?

    Greetings
    Carsten

I have the same problem. I must download 1480 MB, but in one day I make maybe 40-50 MB. Whats going wrong here?

I've had this on WSUS beta, WSUS RC and WSUS RTM. Also downloading at about 50mb a day. Painfully slow. WSUS running on same server (2003sp1) doesn't suffer this problem. Good idea to check your BITS settings to make sure it''s not being throttled. One poster on the beta newsgroup found that disabling Mcafee AV on his ISA server (that doubled up as the WSUS box) resolved the problem! Not a particularly good solution.

    Max.

BITS uses idle system time. If your machine is too busy it'll take forever to download. Try setting the BITS foreground bit like this:
    WsusDebugTool.exe /Tool:SetForegroundDownload

Correction, Hellian... BITS uses idle /network/ time.

If your /network/ is too busy, it'll take forever to download. :-)

The purpose of BITS is to throttle, use available, and protect in use /bandwidth/.

I understand that BITS throttles it's network usage but it's system idle time that it uses to schedule itself. Run something simple as SETI@HOME or some other idle time soaker and BITS all but dies Appy!

It's on the WSUS beta place stite.

Yes I can confirm that, BITS transfers through an ISA server with McAfee Security Shield installed are very slow, I haven't found a fix for it yet unfortunately.

Since that site is probably down now, it would be better to use the RTM version at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv.../downloads/def ault.mspx
