Salaam Namaste
Salaam Namaste is a movie reflecting the different highs, lows trials and tribulations of a live-in relationship. Preity Zinta as Amber (pronounced ‘humburrrrrrr’ by her thickly sound-Indian accented boss) is a radio jockey while the debonair Saif Ali khan is a gourmet chef who hates being called by his real name Nikhil Arora’ n responds to the shorter ‘Nick’. Both look really ravishing n Preity’s lost oodles of weight!
As expected, the movie has a very urban, young and happening look and is set in Melbourne, Australia replete with beaches, swimming costumes and a bevy of phirang , gori babes ready to shed off their clothes without a moment’s notice!
Preity and Saif meet at a wedding , hosted on a beautiful beach and they realize they have a thing for each other. At the end of this wedding their friends (Cathy played by AXN’s ‘who dares wins’ hostess Tania Zaetta and Ron-the ever lovable Arshad Warsi) also fall in love and end up marrying ! Preity and Saif realize that they wouldn’t want to miss their shot at love but neither of them is prepared for marriage, so Saif convinces Preity for a live-in relationship. They co-rent a wonderful bungalow from a really eccentric character played to the hilt by Javed Jaffery with his blond bimbette gf who never seems to understand what he says!
Javed and Ms.Bimbette provide the comic relief (he, with his cowboy look and funny English with surplus ‘the’s and she, with her totally lost ‘sorry?’)
So all is quite hunky dory for our very much in love Nick and Amber till one fateful morning when she realizes that she is pregnant!!(‘inspite of protection!!,’ she gasps) Nick develops cold feet and wants the child aborted while Amber, hurt by his lack of commitment and total insensitivity to the issue, decides to keep the child and raise it on her own. Hence there is a big rift and they decide to separate but unfortunately for them both have invested all their money into renting their dream house for a year and have to spend 8 more months together.
The second half of the movie shows a very pregnant and frustrated amber managing work n studies, fighting cravings for Ben n Jerry’s Belgian dark chocolate ice-cream , fighting, crying ,puking into Nick’s Chef cap and breaking out into a moonwalk like she suddenly forgot she was pregnant!
Towards the end Saif realizes his mistake and Preity gives birth to twins amidst a lot of craziness (Abhishek Bachchan plays a totally absent minded obstetrician) and all’s well that ends well.
All in all, a movie that tries to explore the relatively new concept of live-in relationships, unconventional professions like RJs n chefs…….but still ends up reminding us of the age-old pre-marital sex and subsequent unwanted pregnancy of movies of yore….so has Hindi cinema really taken a step forward with this film?)
