    Seagate 4TB NAS HDD

NAS Storage is ideal solution for small and medium business for data backup. In today’s growing environment, the risk of data loss and corruption also increase. That is due to various factors. NAS provide you a dedicated storage system which is designed specifically for performance and durable output. They are not like your regular system. NAS or Network Attached storage operates on file level data backup. In one word it is the file server of your network. Where you can not only store data but also use it as a centralized location for data backup. NAS devices comes up to 5 bay supports where you can install up to 20TB of hard drive. This is more than enough for any small or medium business. Having a NAS setup offers piece of mind, were your data is stored on different location which is easy to retrieve in case of system failure. Also it is powered by durable HDD which are different that regular interval drive. They operate better on high temperature and reliable enough for 24x7 usages.

In this article we are going to one of that internal NAS HDD which is Seagate 4TB NAS HDD. Marked as NAS drive, this is built for high end performance and long lasting support. The drive provides powerful features with high speed data transfer interface. We found the drive effective in terms of file backup and storage. Seagate is a market leading in provided some of the best reliable solution for storage. Seagate offers four hard drive series for Enterprise storage solution. Design & Features:

Seagate 4TB NAS HDD features 3.5” form factor. That is a thick drive with ample of platters inside. Due to which you get more amount of storage compare to other drives. This hard drive is ideally designed for NAS solution. And being an internal hard drive you can also use it for your pc. But as a backup solution. Adding this with SSD which act as your primary OS drive and Seagate 4TB NAS will give ultimate performance at extreme level. In terms of performance I will not say it is the fastest hard drive, but it is reliable. It offers 5900 rpm that is enough for data transfer. Seagate offers 3 size variations under NAS series. They are 2TB, 3TB & 4TB with common specification. 4TB edition is build for giving out reliable performance on small NAS system. It is powered by NASWork Technology.

This adds more benefit is customizing the drive performance as per your need. It offers you option to control error recovery on NAS setup. This also includes power management and vibration control. Being an effective firmware it allows the drive to work for longer period. There are ample of more features that make the drive more reliable in terms of long usage. The drive is also very quiet on usage and low on vibration. While testing I found it extremely low on noise. There is no disturbance at all. Even when you are moving a huge amount of data on LAN in the drive is quiet and low vibration. The drive fits well inside a NAS device. The drive is compatible with all kinds of NAS solution. Seagate itself also provides you different NAS solution. On the official site you can find the list of leading NAS manufacturer which offer support for this 4TB drive. The list includes Asustor, Buffalo, D-Link, Drobo, Lacie, Lenovo, QNAP, Synology and Thecus including Seagate. This also adds more to upgrade choice. If you are using a NAS product from any of this manufacturer, and willing to go for new upgrade, Seagate 4TB NAS HDD can be helpful here.

    NAS Configuration:

I started testing it first on FreeNAS. It is an open source solution available to configure your own NAS setup. Here the setup was not complicated. Within few time the drive was ready to use. On freeNAS I configured the entire 4TB as single shared space. I am not using a RAID setup here. The volume is shared as ZFS file system type on Windows CIFS service. It works fine. Being internal hard drive the performance is only affected if it is accessed by multiple users at the single time. It is quiet ideal for small and mid size business enterprise. Where talking a data backup on a LAN network of 10 to 15 systems will work fine. Seagate NAS drive does not lack performance.

The output is only restricted due to hardware limitation. The performance also depends on the type of nas software you are using. Ample of them offer you incremental backup solution. Where only modified files are replaced. In this mode your nas setup performs better as it does not have to rewrite everything. NAS drives are usually designed to store and access data. They have a specific firmware that operates on better transfer rate and allows nonstop performance. After testing Seagate NAS 4TB for a couple of days on my network through FreeNAS I am quite satisfied here. It was working fine on a small network, but for a bigger network you have to use a more powerful drive with higher rpm. Entire thing here depend on the LAN speed. On high speed network the drive would give you better output while on slower one the transfer speed is affected.

    Performance:

Seagate 4TB NAS drive in terms of performance can get 7out of 10. That is just a random score as per my testing method. Durable design, good transfer rate, and low temperature on continuous operation are great features. Seagate has ideally designed this drive for a medium network. It is recommended to buy Seagate NAS Bay. This is more optimized and great for regular backup solution. You can also create your own personal cloud using this 4Tb drive. But I do not think this hard drive is great for accessing multimedia files on a LAN network. For small network it works fine, but for a bigger size network buffering will be a common issue. The only benefit you have in this drive is a separate firmware NASWork which is designed to operate on NAS environment offering you more optimum performance and realizable storage output. On a regular network a data transfer speed between a system and this nas drive lies around 10 to 15 mb/s. This is when the drive is connected to a pc and working on NAS OS. While compare to that the data transfer speed on NAS Bay is much higher here.

    Re: Seagate 4TB NAS HDD

Seagate provides three different models under NAS Bay. The first one support up to 10pc offering you 4TB Maximum storage, second support up to 20PC with maximum storage of 8TB and the last one support up to 50 pc with maximum storage of 16TB. Below you can also see the drive disk performance. I just hooked it on Windows 8 system and was trying to find out the internal transfer speed. IF we use the drive for the PC. Because there are many people who are looking for a reliable data storage solution by adding a secondary hard drive in their system. Below you can see two test. The first is the result of Crystal Disk Mark that offer you the drive transfer speed. I had connected the NAS drive to a Windows 8 system. The next test belong to HDD Tune Pro. Which is the actual benchmarking test. The tool offers you a bit higher speed output compare to Crystal Disk Mark. This is test shows the maximum capacity of disk to perform. The first image is Read Benchmark under HDD Tune Pro and the second is for Write Speed. It is really impressive here. 177 mb/s of write speed is not really bad for a NAS drive.

    CrystalDiskMark:

    Conclusion:
Seagate 4TB NAS HDD is a performance hard drive. Powered by NASWork it gives you reliable solution for data backup for network attached storage. You can simply use it with various NAS bays to get your own personal reliable network storage or cloud server. Being a performance drive it is better for longer usage. Ideal for small and mid business environment this NAS 4TB drive works efficiently 24x7. The drive temperature is also controlled. It is designed for performance usage. Along with this it also offers you a large 4TB size for storage. Instead of NAS setup you can also use the drive as a secondary storage in your pc. The drive works on low power due to which it remains cooler in longer operation. That is one of the prime benefits here. On regular LAN network the speed lies around 10 to 15mb/s which are not really bad. While on a pc it offers around 100mb/s of data transfer speed internally. The cost of this hard drive is Rs.15100 for 4TB, Rs.11,250 for 3TB & Rs.8,400 for 2TB Excluding VAT. This makes it fair in terms of budget NAS solution. This drive works perfectly on a network of 5 to 10 workstations. While for higher network you require a more powerful configuration and higher rpm.

    Pros:
    • Low Power Usage
    • Long & Reliable Performance
    • Low DATA Latency
    • NASWork Firmware

    Cons:
    • Ideal for Small Network
