RIM BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 and 9930

Early this afternoon new RIM BlackBerry Bold 9900 (and 9930) was announced. The announcement came during a morning session on RIM BlackBerry World in Orlando offers many BlackBerry conferences. BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930:

The first thing you'll notice is that the design of the 9900 significantly changed compared to the Bold 9700 and 9780. The device with its 10.5 mm thickness is much thinner than its predecessors. The frame of the device is made of brushed stainless steel and provides a luxurious, solid impression. The new Bold is slightly longer and the 9900 is much broader than its predecessors. The extra width is used for BlackBerry keys of the keyboard is also wider. This is noticeable because we think the Bold 9900 a lot more comfortable typing than the Bold 9780. Furthermore, the entire unit feels much more luxurious and more solid in your hand.

One of the bigger changes of the Bold 9900 Bold compared to previous devices is the addition of the touchscreen and the new BlackBerry OS 7. The BlackBerry OS is not completely rewritten the best touchscreen experience. The touchscreen is more an additional functionality to allow for smooth scrolling, or a quick screen to click the button. Much of the control will still go through the navigation buttons. Yet we can say that the touchscreen is a very nice addition. Especially scrolling in the browser or e-mail is smooth and faster than using the trackpad. Since the device is adapted to touch some parts of the screen a bit too small for comfortable to click.

BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900:

A major change in BlackBerry OS 7 is Liquid Graphics. This speeds up the graphics and that is very noticeable. The Bold 9900 feels much smoother than the 9780 in everything we tried. This will partly be due to the Liquid Graphics and partly by a faster processor. Also scrolling through websites quickly went without all empty blocks were visible that first had to load. We also have an HD video trailer also seen going on smoothly.
The resolution of the screen is raised to 640x480 (VGA) so everything looks much sharper. The screen size is slightly enlarged from 2.4 "to 2.8". What we also noticed that the angle of the screen a lot better. With the Bold 9780 is the viewing angle and this is somewhat disappointing to 9900 a lot better. The sound from the device can be very loud and sounded not bad for a mobile device.

Another addition to the Bold 9900 is the NFC chip. This makes it possible to communicate with RFID chips, such as wireless payment. The user can choose to NFC on or off. In a brief demo we received was a business card with RFID read data quickly and was all important information directly on the device visible.



The browser also has a major update to the BlackBerry OS 7. One of the major changes is support including HTML5 video support. This means that it is possible to download videos directly in the browser. The browser also felt smoother, especially when scrolling. When the browser is also very nice touch, thanks to the scroll and pinch-to-zoom functionality.

Our first experience with the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is very positive. Especially when we compared the Bold 9700 or 9780 set is a great step forward and a big improvement. It remains to be seen what the battery life is and how the device with the final software will work. This is expected later this year in an extensive review to report.
