Best Linux OS for Remote Desktop

To help someone in his work or on a specific problem, to perform operations on a remote machine or to do maintenance on a server, you may need to access the desktop from a machine remote. For this, there is an application on Windows XP called Remote Desktop Connection, which allows connecting through a LAN or via Internet to a machine. We will see in this tutorial, how, what are the prerequisites and what options are available.

To use the Remote Desktop Connection, you must consider several prerequisites:
    • the host (i.e. the remote machine on which you will connect) must have Windows XP professional, Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003
    • the client (i.e. the local machine with which you will connect) must have:
    • Windows XP (Pro or Home) or Windows Server 2003
    • Windows Me, Windows 98 or Windows 2000, in which case it will install the feature (you can find the installation file on the Windows XP CD or the Microsoft site)
    • Mac OS and the software Customer CBD
    • you must have a network connection on which is the host, either directly or on the network through a VPN
    • port 3389 must be opened because the connection will be via the TCP port
    • you must have at least one account with a password on the host

I had provided you some most widely used and nice remote desktop software’s. Linux Distros are considered as the most secure and even everything is simply possible on that platform also.

    Krdc

KRDC is KDE Remote Desktop Client. KRDC was overhauled as part of Google Summer of Code (SoC) 2007 Urs Wolfer and other developers to be included in KDE 4.0 . An overhaul was needed as KRDC development had slowed to a stop because he had no active support for several years. The operation is simple because we run it for 2 excellent tool (and krdc krfb) that can easily interact with a remote connection. In a nutshell, KRDC (Remote Desktop Connection) is a client application that allows us to not only sees but also to control the desktop session of another computer with a compatible server (VNC) running.

As for krfb (Remote Frame Buffer) note that it is a simple protocol for remote access to graphical user interfaces. To better explain the process that is set in motion, we remind you that the RFB protocol, the application running on our computer (that is, where are the screen, keyboard and mouse) corresponds to the client. The application that runs on the computer where the frame buffer (that is running the windowing system and applications that the user is remotely controlling) instead of taking the clothes of the server. Connect to a Desktop is very simple. It's about creating an invitation by krfb which will be sent via email to another user who does not have to do is use the address in the body of the email to connect to via Remote Desktop KRDC.
TightVNC server running on winxp, client krdc (4.2.86, works in kde 4.3.1 - apparently forgot to update with the next beta before release when the long-shaking from the kde opensuse factory) is running in linux. Everything connects and works for a while, then within a few minutes hangs - it helps just to restart the server to win.

    VNC

The classic client (port 5900) requires installation of VNC Viewer (downloadable here ) for anyone who wants to take control remotely. However the VNC client HTTP (port 5800) has the enormous advantage of working without installation. This can be handy when using mobile when you want / cannot install the client software classic. It only requires a java compatible browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) allows use of a remote computer exactly as if you were facing him: The mouse movements and key presses on the keyboard are transmitted by the network to the remote computer for fly, back an image of the screen of the remote computer is returned at regular intervals. VNC consists of two distinct parts: a resident software (WinVNC) that installs on a remote host client software (VNC Viewer) that allows access. Configuration is minimal and sufficient to implement the server portion of VNC to specify a password that protects access to the remote machine. On the client side, it connects to the remote machine by specifying IP address and has the password previously chosen.

VNC allows for any remote operation, the only constraint being to support the flow of the Internet connection that determines the frequency of refreshing the display of the remote screen. This program is very convenient for working at home, the administration of remote servers or in a learning situation in a computer room. Connections are protected by password and can be secured through the SSH (Secure Shell). One can "see the screen of the other" also from their web browser.

Remember to set a PASSWORD. It is very important if anyone could access your PC. I repeat that it is very important! To set a password, right-click VNC Server in the bar at the bottom right, then click Options, click the VNC password authentication (if not already selected) and finally, click Configure and enter your word password To gain access to a PC, you need the IP of the person you want to help and that VNC is installed correctly. If the PC user does not agree, you do not use RealVNC to control your PC.

It is a client / server application and it is necessary to install on each machine. One server that will be subject to the takeover, and the customer will be taking over the PC. It is also necessary to configure firewalls, routers and two of each machine, and have the IP address of the control.

    RealVNC

Download the software RealVNC shut us you install the program. Just follow the instructions on the screen. You can run the program in two ways. The VNC server can automatically run at startup in the background. You may click on Windows NT/2000 or XP Start / Programs / RealVNC / VNC Server 4 (service mode) / Register VNC Service ". From now on, the VNC server each time a service started. Second you start the program manually. After installation go to Start > Programs > RealVNC > VNC Server (User Mode) and click on Run VNC Server.

The VNC server is the computer on which you want to network or Internet access over. After restarting the computer will normally be a dialog box in which you are the top text box on the need to enter password. Appears text box is not this, go to Start / Programs / RealVNC / VNC Server 4 (User Mode) and click on Configure VNC Service or in the taskbar, click the right mouse button on Options.

    Remmina

Remmina client is a remote desktop connection for system administrators who need to work with lots of remote computers. Remmina supports network protocols RDP, VNC, SSH and XDMCP. Remmina is free and open source, licensed under the GNU GPL. Remmina client is a remote desktop connection for system administrators who need to work with lots of remote computers. Remmina supports network protocols RDP, VNC, SSH and XDMCP. Remmina is free and open source, licensed under the GNU GPL. VNC connections can also be reversed ("reverse") be established, for example if the server is behind a NAT router. Furthermore, Avahi supports to the local network to search for servers. For the upcoming version 0.8 is also the support of NX and integration into the Telepathy framework planned.

It allows one to access remote desktops with different protocols. Currently, the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), the X Display Manager Control Protocol (XDMCP) and Virtual Network Computing (VNC) support. In addition, the requests will be initiated as necessary, through an SSH tunnel.

After installing the program on applications - remote desktop for > Internet > remmina Viewer to start. Clicking on Edit > New to create a new connection. This must now select the protocol and the correct data for the remote site can be entered. SSH is used to encrypt, it must Understanding localhost server will be given as, because you do so thanks to SSH on the remote machine is already. After clicking Connect, the working surface of the remote computer will appear. If the connection came about, can also chat messages and share files with the other side (if supported by server).

    Vinagre

Vinagre - VNC Client for Desktop GNOME. The program has a simple interface. Supports simultaneous access to multiple machines, the work in full screen mode, use avahi to search for available VNC servers, storage keys in GNOME. Frequently used connections can be saved in the bookmark > Favorites and Recent Connection to quickly call them. It is not certain that those they are functional on other distributions. Schedule a party will be posted later for other distros.

You never dream of driving a remote machine? A bit like die hard 4 or Matrix? I bet it does! But you're disappointed after your Google emerged when you discovered it was necessarily going through the black console. Frankly, everything is just fine for pro ..." you're probably saying. But from there, I arrest you! Vinagre is the tool you need. Before telling stuff, let me first introduce you to (very) early two protocols (type of language used by the machines to communicate): SSH and VNC.

Ssh secure shell (i.e. secure shell) is a communications protocol allowing two machines to exchange data. Basically, this protocol was designed to fly a remote terminal. He has replaced several programs such as remote login rsh or telnet through the security it offers to users. Indeed it requires an encryption key at the beginning of each connection, allowing encryption (the info out as Canal + decoder when thee not) Total communication throughout the duration of the session.

    NX Server

NX lets you use your computer remotely just as you would with VNC or Windows Remote Desktop. NX but has several advantages. Based on X-Window, NX Server for Linux is similar to Microsoft Terminal Server or Citrix XenApp. The availability of Linux applications is possible for any type of client PCs or thin clients. Technology nx was developed by the company NoMachine. This technology is comparable to that developed by Citrix and Microsoft resumed under the name Windows Terminal Server. The technology is free, and the company NoMachine markets the server side and provides free customers. WARNING: NoMachine also offers a free server (but not free), limited access to only 2.

The free server FreeNX is therefore based on this technology. There are also free clients, but these are yet more complicated to use. The purpose of FreeNX is to export a complete graphical desktop on a remote machine using a minimum bandwidth (a modem connection at 56kbps is sufficient). For security reasons, the FreeNX server uses private key. To avoid having to install a key on each client, it is possible to use the default key that came with the NoMachine client or using a personal key. The second method is somewhat more restrictive, but more secure.

Re: Best Linux OS for Remote Desktop

Compared with the previous version is 3.0.0 NoMachine NX with many changes and innovations . Among other things, it is now possible to share with other users local desktops. By Session shadowing allows the application, even multiple users on one and the same access session. Another innovation is the ability to perform operations with scripts. Further, the developer claims to have improved in many areas of application and eliminates many shortcomings. Sun NoMachine NX handles addition to the officially supported platforms, the x86_64 architecture and Windows Vista. NoMachine NX 3.0.0 is available in different versions for various platforms. In addition to paid versions, the manufacturer offers a free version for Linux on the server. This can be used unlimited time, but is limited to the paid version on two users.

    Some More Tools

Most applications do not require troubleshooting movement on site and can be solved remotely with respect to the software and operating systems. Some recommended software for rdp which works with most of the operating systems

LogMeIn Free (Windows and Mac OS X) but very basic tool for sufficient assistance needs, disinfection or to access your files from any Web browser. Create an account and then install the software on the computer to control. No configuration of the firewall (firewall) or your box (box) Internet required.

TeamViewer (Windows and Mac OS X) solution to remotely monitor, share your screen or transfer files with the remote machine. No installation required, you run the software and release an identifier (ID) and password to your partner (by phone) to start a handhold remote or show your latest PowerPoint or Impress.

SparkAngels (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux) support service for remote support or training instantaneous. SparkAngels technology uses Java to run on any PC or Mac system. No installation required, just accept the certificates and licenses in your browser. Limited to 100 minutes per month in its free version.

Netviewer (Windows and Mac OS X) maintenance tool remote desktop sharing (screen) and online conference. Once downloaded, run the Netviewer program on the computer consultant and participant, select the Basic or Expert mode, contact the session number that appears (by telephone) to begin session.

Remote Assistance in Windows XP & Vista: You can also use the remote assistance service included in Windows XP and Windows Vista to intervene or seek help. See the excellent tutorial available on Internet Tips and this page of 01net to know the difference with Remote Desktop
UltraVNC : (all Windows versions, Mac OS and Linux) one of the first tools remote control, used by many professionals. A book for specialists because UltraVNC is not secure by default.

Windows Live Messenger (Windows XP, Vista and 7) In addition to playing video calls or chat (cat), you can be serviced by requesting assistance directly into your instant messenger.

    Conclusion :

The remote desktop access between Windows and Linux usually consumes a lot of bandwidth, time and nerves. Would not it be nice if Windows users could just as easy graphical access to other systems such as Linux, Windows machines, which might best yet with the same application. With xrdp, which presents this article detail, this goal is within reach. If you want to work cross platform then xrdp is the proper choice. In xrdp is an open-source implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol, which use the Windows Terminal Services to connect to Windows desktops. The xrdp package brings the RDP protocol on the Linux computer by X server will provide one of the links of the rdesktop program [1] and Windows Terminal Server client accepts.

SSH Secure Shell is a descendant from the protocol telnet . SSH allows you to remotely access a shell of a computer, all in a safe way (the transmission is encrypted). What can you do with the shell? In short, all you can do with the GUI much more. Read the article "Power of Linux Console" for details. SSH can also run graphical applications remotely on your local machine, provided you have installed an X server locally.

One of the innovations that have included is the ability to switch between sessions when you are KRDC full screen. The truth is that it is something that is very useful and I am surprised they have not included before. I guess for lack of time have not been implemented before. Its okay, as they say: better late than never. They have also added a button when you are on full display that lets you open new connections.

With third-party programs such as the various VNC (RealVNC, TightVNC, Vnc4, etc.) or the less popular but much more efficient FreeNX , you have several other possibilities for remote access to your machine. Both technologies allow you to login remotely, or to join an existing session of X (read only or read-write). Both technologies are platform independent and can therefore be used in all combination's of MS Windows and GNU / Linux.
The main thing is probably the option for remote shell access to text mode and the ability to run single applications remotely (without having to first download the entire environment) and through SSH tunneling.

Desktop Sharing on Windows and Linux is at a similar level. I might even take the responsibility to say that the default Windows Remote Desktop is a superior solution for sharing desktop XDMCP or GNOME and KDE. When used platform-independent technologies (VNC, FreeNX and NX client-server that cost) the benefits are similar in both environments. It should also be mentioned that the commercial package of NX is the best solution when you are short on bandwidth.
