    Netgear ReadyNas DUO

Netgear, quia bought last year the company exhibited at CES Infrant the ReadyNas Duo, a 2 SATA NAS operates a technology but duplication of data owners.

Called X-Raid provides copying on both disks of all data and it is apparently possible to activate any raid mode. Called X-Raid provides copying on both disks of all data and it is apparently possible to activate any raid mode. It is therefore not possible to add storage capacity of two drives. The ReadyNAS Duo is, as its name suggests a model to get two hard drives, but while the other models of double-disc record we tend to adopt clean lines as possible, NetGear instead in the "massive". In fact, it should not be long to realize that NetGear has focused on quality manufacturing and finishing her baby. If it is massive, the ReadyNAS Duo breathe especially the strength and the luxury to propose two racks to accommodate hard drives. Suddenly, the setting up of discs is no problem: just begin to open the door and remove the racks to screw the hard drives. Then, return all in the NAS and can turn on the beast.

The first table is used to adjust network settings for the Ready Nas Duo. If the default is seeking an address from a DHCP server commonly present in the ADSL box, it is possible to specify by hand the addresses to be used by the Netgear.

The MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) may be increased to accelerate the transfer of large files, yet will it be sure that the Switch and the computers are also capable of managing a non-standard MTU.Ready Nas The duo can also force the use of a transfer speed other than the automatic, the same for the half and full duplex. For the vast majority of individuals the automatic mode is most appropriate.

    General Settings

In the second sub menu, General settings, it is possible to define more precisely some parameters Ready Nas duo on the network: first name on the network, the working group (VOLUME default Workgroup might juudicieux been more?), gateway or the DNS server. Note that if you use a DHCP server, gateway and DNS servers will be retrieved directly.

    Admin password

It is strongly recommended to change the administrator password NAS in that it is the same default for all SINs in the range. In case of loss of the password may be sent to a mail address of your choice, with certain reservations. A good compromise and a security, a priori good NAS.

    Account Management

Here you can manage all settings for user accounts and their group.Managing users and groups that did nothing extraordinary, the options are as common group membership, mail or the possibility of setting a quota of disk space. It is appreciable power against import and / or export lists of users and / or groups directly from the interface. The format is the CSV format commonly used in that area.

One option still leaves a bit of the lot, it is possible to override the default options Ready Nas duet when creating an account. A useful option especially if you often need to create user accounts.

The management of alerts, dissemination of options (iTunes, photo) via download services (FTP, HTTP, Bit torrent), nothing really miss the call and the parameters of these functions is very comprehensive.Since we are never satisfied, we will still no Web server is not core to the program while the ReadyNAS Duo makes a faultless in terms of protocols (AFP, SMB, FTP, NFS) or management of external drives. By the way Qnap, it is possible to add modules to integrate such functions and others. Finally, three USB ports are present, but that NetGear has been strangely silent on the eSATA.

    Transfer Rate: FTP

To test the performance in reading and writing ReadyNas Duo from Netgear we have transferred a file of 1864 MB and have measured the average flow during the transfer. Measurements were made in several cases. We first installed a single hard disk, and then a second was set up to do RAID. Measurements were made with a disc and two in RAID 0 and 1.For each configuration we have made statements in turn using FTP and then Samba (Microsoft Windows Network).

The Ready Nas Duo from Netgear is not very fast, it is in the bottom of the table when it comes to transfer rates in reading, against it by writing improves with 15.6Mo / s, which place in the table.

The passage of RAID does almost nothing for the Ready Nas Duo, but like most other NAS lose transfer rate it comes out better. Without being exceptional it is still not too bad behind large models of this comparison: DS209 +, M3200, M3800 and DS207 +. Now look at the performance in Windows share.

    Noise and power consumption

The NAS will not shut down power, fortunately! Idle In the Nas from Netgear is not very greedy with 12Watt it consumes as much as the DS207 +, Nas IB 4220 or the 209 Pro II TS. Pending against consumption rises by more than the others to achieve 26Watts and 30 Watts burn. It is very reasonable, but not among the best in the ranking.

The Ready Nas Duo is not particularly quiet, even if the noise level is not so high as that, the noise generated by the NAS is more painful it may sound. The fan noise is quite high and annoying, so even when the disks are in standby noise remains. The scratches produced by the discs can be easily transmitted to the housing which renders it.

    Conclusion

Another positive point from Netgear: management rights on the files and directories. Many options are available (I will let you review the first pages where we have detailed if necessary) and permissions on files and / or directories can be finely defined according to the user, its group or the rest users. For example, it is possible to allow writing a directory but does not allow deletion or renaming files.

Last positive, not least, the backup module integrated into the NAS: it can make backups of files and directories completely automated. It can search files by FTP, in CIFS by Rsyc and save them internally, or on a FTP or a Windows share for example. If vouchers are also free software under Windows they need to have the PC switched on. Here it will be the Ready Nas Duo which will automatically load: a true backup center, with several spots independent of each other.

While this is not the fastest, although it is really good in Windows network share, but maintains he did quite well. Furthermore, sold just under € 200 without the disk it is well positioned and less expensive than the DS207, 207 +, 209 +, 209 Pro II TS, N3200 (Pro).
