When a traditional 16:10 LCD monitor handles 16:9 signals in generating Full HD image, there are usually two ways to get it done. The first way would be to stretch the image which results in picture distortions. Another way would be to cover up the surplus image using horizontal black bars. Either way - stretching the image by 10% or covering 10% of the image - would cause a seriously impact to quality of your visual entertainment.

Design
The E2200HD is well-designed and looks classy sitting on the desktop. It has a stylish black piano finish bezel with a matte silver chin below the panel. The back of the monitor has a leather-finish like plastic that gives it a neat look. Overall, I'm impressed with the design and build quality of the E2200HD. Twin 2W speakers are placed at the bottom of the panel, but don't expect too much from them.This aside, the piano black finish does make for a far more striking contrast with its silver screen surround than the white of the M2200HD did. It also makes the E2200HD look a tad slimmer, which in turn makes the entire display look more attractive. The large power button still has an unobtrusive green LED, and the menu buttons are still clearly marked on the left side of the bezel. This, combined with the logical, colourful OSD makes adjusting the E2200HD's settings very easy, with the only niggle being that the up/down navigation buttons actually work right/left, which is a bit counter-intuitive.

As far as connectivity goes, the E2200HD looses its cousin's USB hub, but retains the triple-whammy video inputs of VGA, DVI and HDMI. And though there is no 3.5mm audio input to go with the VGA or DVI connections, at least there's a headphone socket on the display's side to give a signal from the HDMI port, rather than forcing you to use the poor integrated speakers. The same cable-tidying clip does as good a job of managing cables as on the other BenQs using this chassis, but regrettably the company still doesn't include any digital cables with its monitors, only VGA. Another small negative is that because the E2200HD's chassis was designed to house USB ports and a webcam, the bulges for these at the left and top are still present, with blanking plates to cover them. Naturally, using the same chassis for an entire series does allow BenQ to keep the price down, but we'll get onto value for money in a bit. First let's take a look at the monitor's most important aspect: its image performance.

Performance


Overall color accuracy is good if not great. Uncalibrated color accuracy is good under ColorEyes Display Pro but not so good under Monaco Optix XR; switch to calibrated color accuracy and the tables are turned, with Optix XR generating a better result -- although the scores are a lot closer than the uncalibrated results. The real benefit is that Optix XR generates a color profile that doesn't have the any colors with a Delta E above 3.0, and only four colors are above 2.0. Compare that with ColorEyes where there are several large spikes, the highest reaching 5.5. The E2200HD doesn't turn in the best Delta E results we have seen, but average dE of around 1.5 after calibration is certainly acceptable.

Color gamut is definitely nowhere near as high as the top displays, and in fact the results are near the bottom of our charts for desktop LCDs. However, the color gamut of 73.5% is more than sufficient for sRGB viewing. Comparing the profile to the sRGB color space, the E2200HD achieves a score of 96%. In other words, unless you're an imaging professional using an expanded color space, the E2200HD will work just fine.

It performed well in our colour and contrast tests, and it's capable of displaying the tiniest details in Blu-ray movies (it supports HDCP) and HD free-to-air TV programs. The one area in which the monitor wasn't impressive was in displaying fast motion. It has a 5ms response time, but trails were visible in scrolling text and window moving tests. Movies were handled quite well, though, as motion was not a problem when viewing HD movies and even DVDs.

The monitor's colours were accurate during our tests with DisplayMate, although we did notice some slight discolouration in mid-level grey tones. These looked a little too yellow. We enjoyed the monitor's reproduction of primary colours, and found it to be quite vibrant overall. Its brightness was adequate for a well-lit office environment, but we did have to turn up the brightness to 90 per cent. Viewing from the sides wasn't a problem, but you'll still get best results from directly in front.

In DisplayMate's brightness and contrast tests, the monitor passed, but not while it was at its default settings. We had to adjust the contrast and brightness levels slightly in order to view all light-grey blocks on a white background and all dark-grey blocks on a black background. Its black level was deep, and it didn't look at all pale in a lit environment, but while watching movies in a darkened room we did notice some backlight bleeding at the top and bottom of the screen. This was a little distracting, especially during dark movie scenes.

The Final Word
You're not limited to standard PC use; the HDMI port means you can watch Blu-ray movies at full HD resolutions. You'll need external speakers, as the 1W speakers aren't capable of producing good sound, but the high-quality screen makes movies look great. This makes the E2200HD a good choice for entertainment, provided you don't want to watch TV. With the highest resolution, best image quality and lowest price of all the 22in monitors here, the E2200HD is incredible value. It's our favourite monitor here, and wins a Best Buy award. Consider this monitor if you want a larger resolution for the home or office, but don't want a huge monitor to dwarf you as you sit at your desk. Maybe give it a miss if you're a gamer, as you might notice too much blurring.
