Automatic Updates - Error Message 1058

Recently my Windows XP system got infected with Virus. I clean up the entire system by scanning it with several security suites. Now it is virus free. But when I am trying to turn on Automatic Updates but it is not turning on. Also when I went to Serices console (services.msc) and tried starting the same it gave me an error message saying:

“Could not start the automatic updates service on local computer error 1058”

Apart from this, it is also not allowing me to install Service Pack 2 on this computer. I don’t have any idea what else can I do. Hope someone from you can help me out. Many Thanks.

As far as installing Service Pack 2 is concerned if you are not able to get it from Windows Update you can simply download it separately from Microsoft Website and then boot into safemode and launch sp2 file to start the installation.
