Screensavers are gone/grayed out.

I have recently installed Windows XP 3d screensaver. But when I went to the screensavers tab then it was totally grayed out except the power saver button way on the bottom. There is no uninstall in the add and remove tab in control. The .scr resides in windows directory. I then tried to manually remove and then reinstall it but it didnt work. Can anyone please help.

You need to go to Start and then Run and type regedit. After that find the below registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

Now you need to find the entry that says SCRNSAVE.EXE and then delete the same key. If you have any entry that says ScreenSaveActive, then delete that as well and once you have done this then you can select a screensaver.

Also, if you are doing the above things then always backup the registry first. You can do it quite easily by clicking on file menu and then selecting Export. It is always a good idea to back up, even if you are making a minor change suggested by a reliable source. Incase you make an error, then you have a current backup to restore from.
