Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
Win Update told me today that SP3 was ready to download. Tried and it failed
after about 20 minutes after downloading a "preparing your computer for
download".
Tried a 2nd time with same result each with the error code Error Code:
0x80004005.
Seems to be a different code to other people, so what is it and how can I
overcome it.
RE: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
Hi, I tried the same thing 3 different times today-once from windows update
and twice from microsoft update--I received the same error code and no where
can I find what it means.

Same mysterious error message for me too.
Can't Microsoft explain and resolve this?

It's a problem with licensing. I've the same problem with a regular licensed
Windows. I think that the problem is not the SP3. In the installed Software
List is no Windows Genuine (or so). On an other PC ist this Software in the
List.
Microsoft, please give us an update for that, we have a registred version of
windows.

I hope that SP3 isn't being released to countries where there is no
support other than calling in. There's no phone number listed outside of
the US.

Thanks both. I agree there should be a fix for this somewhere. I belong to
another forum and have had some advice from there - if it works, I will post
back with the result.

0x80004005 = unspecified error - may occur because of programs/services interferring in
the background.
Manually download SP3 and install the same if necessary in *safe mode* -

Re: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
Interestingly when I called MS about this I was told by 4 different
people that I must have installed the beta as the final version hadn't
been released yet. Me thinks they don't know what's going on!

OK, so I can download and install from your link BUT that download is over
400Mb (from memory) whereas the Win Update is only 66Mb. Also you say Quote

Re: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
well, i tried it 5 times now, shut off everything i think they told me too,
and it still wont work. Personally, it can sit there till they have it ready
to download without having to read thru the maze of fixes and whatnot.

RE: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
I had the same problem. Microsoft advised me to cleanup possibly corrupted
download files and turn off security tools that may affect Windows udate.
Since my download completed before I got the 0x80004005, I just turned off
Spybot SD Resident and Spy Sweeper. I didn't turn off my AVG anti virus and
firewall I went to the Micrsoft download site and started the download again.
No files were downloaded but the update and install process completed
successfully.

Another disaster. On my computer SP3 shows up on Automatic Updates but
the downloading doesn't happen. WU just quits without downloading
anything.
And why will Microsoft not make it available in stores, as a
standalone, complete version, instead of forcing us to first install
SP2, then go through this ordeal?
Just so that we'll buy Vista? Ain't gonna happen. XP is as far as I go
when it comes to Microsoft OSes and this SP3 mess only confirms it.
RE: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
I had the same problem! I fixed it by following TaurArians link listed in
this thread;
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Worked fine!

Re: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
So now I start from scratch, thinking SP3 doesn't like something in my
Windows XP installation. So I wipe the disk clean, re-install SP2,
then go to Windows Update, manually (I don't trust Automatic Updates).
It seems to install SP3 and IE7 OK but after that it will not install
any other updates (like Media Player 11, Validation Tool, Hardware
Updates, ...). It downloads them but refuses to install them.
It just says installation failed. "Troubleshooting" is a joke,
probably designed by the marketting department. Windowsupdate.log is
just meaningless garbage since the error codes are nowhere to be found
on Microsoft web sites. And that's after a completely fresh
installation.
Again, why not release a standalone, clean version, with all the fixes
and upgrades included in it, including IE7 and WMP 11? What is wrong
with those people? Why on earth do they think the average user wants
to go through this?
RE: Win XP SP3 failure Error Code: 0x80004005
I too had this problem. In my case, it affected 2 PCs - one that is a year
old, with SP2 and all subsequent updates installed, and the other a recent
reload, with SP2 but no other updates. I am amazed that it affected 2 such
different builds.
I tried various workarounds, including Live Update (which generated the
0x80004005 error), and downloading both the smaller stand-alone installation
files and trying to install them (only to be told (incorrectly) that the
update "had already been applied").
Finally, after contacting MS Support, I received a very helpful response,
advising me to download and apply the 300+MB file. And this finally worked
on both PCs.
So for anyone who has this problem, I recommend gritting your teeth, and
going for the 1 hour download.
