Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

I was having some problems with dvd playback so I wrongly assumed that my
software needed upgrading. After this was done I no longer have several plug
and play devices working, notably my cd/dvd drives. I used device manager to
diagnose the problem and it displayed a problem with Plug and Play Software
Device Enumerator. I uninstalled as recommended and now I cannot find this
driver to reinstall it. I would welcome any and all assistance. As an aside,
I also tried system restore twice with no success. The error code given is
code 39

There is a menu item in device manager to 'show hidden devices', and the
system area will list that device.

Mark, Thank you for your quick response. Using that menu item showed me two
more devices that are displaying a caution icon. The number of items now
showing a caution are both DVD/CD-ROM drives in the drives section, logitech
QuickCam in imaging devices, Intel PCI Modem, a device called ParVdm, and a
device called Serial in the non-plug and play section, a Creative SB Audigy 2
ZS, and a Creative Game port in the sound, video and game controllers
section, and still no trace of the Plug and play Software Device enumerator.
What should be my next action? Please and thanx

If the 'update driver' feature, or perhaps the 'roll back driver' options in
the properties of each device fail to find a driver, you would need to find
the site of the device maker to try for a driver download.
If Device Manager fails to see something you expect to have, it's probably
not attached right, or it's broken.

And this leads me back to what I was initially looking for, a source for the
Plug and play device driver that I uninstalled. I assume that with this
driver I can get the dvd/cd-rom drives to work so I can load the other
drivers from my reinstall disk, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

What you have to do is take a copy of machine.inf found in your windows root
\inf hidden folder and paste a copy to your desktop. Edit with notepad and
remove the line "ExcludeFromSelect=* ( about line 20) from file; Save it.
then use this file for your driver inf file to reinstall your plug and play
device enumeratior. install a new device find the have disk button browse to
your desktop copy of the machine.inf and choose it. Now under system devices
you will find you plug and play device enumeratior. After its installed,
simply remove one driver at a time and then hit the search changes for each
one. they should all install again to a functioning state.
