How to automate chkdsk and Defrag on Boot.

I have looked at the Tutorials on these subjects and they are acurate
and with clear instructions, BUT ! On my old P.C. (win XP) I had a
program, (and damm, can't remember the name) and it would reboot the
computer and on startup - before windows it would (on a light blue
screen and at the command prompt) run chkdsk then defrag the drive. I
wlways appeared to get much better performance from windows when defrag
was run out side of windows.

My point is that it appears that the tutorials must be able to be
writen into a batch file that will run them at startup and then remove
entries from the reg.

Any body got any idears ?

Oh yes, looked at 'O&O Defrag 10 Profesional' and personaly, after a
lot of agro to get it working, would not buy it.

So you defragged EVERY SINGLE DAY? What a WASTE of time and resources. The
whole point about NTFS filesystem is that it is FAR superior to FAT in it's
file management - you need to defrag far less than ever before.

On Vista defrag is automatically run in the background.

To run chkdsk on startup, Right click your C drive then
Properties>Tools>Check Now. You will be prompted to run chkdsk the next time
your computer boots.

A waste of resources, but you could set up the registry keys to run them and
merge them into the registry each time you logon in. Set them up in the
scheduler or set the registry to run every time.

Why not set them up as a schedule task twice a week. Running chkdsk
every time you boot is a big waste of CPU time and will slow down your
computer. It is like servicing your car every time you are going to get
in it, even if you are going down the shops.

Soory did not make my self cleat !
Oh yes prog was called Defrag from PC Mech.
It worked like this ran prog it then rebooted system and on startup ran
chkdsk then defraged volume.

But is there not a way to create a script file that would reboot system
run chkdsk and defrag then boot into OS.

I will also be shuting of defrag I do not want it running all the time.

As I suggested, set up items to run on the next boot using the two programs,
then go to the registry 'runonce' section and copy off the two entries, then
you can remerge them with one click each time your want to run them, then
restart. Waste of resources to do it every time, but your choice. Do you
really want to try a script when you seem to have so much trouble typing
clearly?

I dont belive you need to creat a script file for this.
You need to creat a .reg file. Similar but not the same.
This will program the registry similar to a script file.
Double clicking on the saved registry file will do the trick.

You want to add keys to the runonce value.

It will tell you how to do it here;

'How to add, modify, or delete registry subkeys and values by using a
registration entries (.reg) file'
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516)

Please note, edit the registry at your own risk. Always back up the
registry before making any changes.
