The User Profile service failed the logon
Dell Inspiron, Microsoft Vista Home Premium, 1918 MB RAM, 2.8 Windows
Experience Index, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55, 1.80 GHz,
updates current as of March 24, 2008. Attempting to log on to my main user
account produces the following screen.

The User Profile service failed the logon.
User profile cannot be loaded.
OK
Microsoft Vista Home Premium

I cannot get into the account, even after logging in as Administrator and
resetting the password for the account. Anyone know what has happened and
how to fix it? I have copied all the user documents including AppData to
another account, but it is still a pain and I would like to know how to
prevent it.

Thanks. The directions are incorrect. There is no "Change Settings" in the
Computer Properties screen, only "Advanced System Settings". Under "User
Profiles", "Settings" the "Delete" button is grayed out for all User
Profiles. ???

More information. This does not appear to be exactly the same problem as
described in Knowledge Base Article 947215. The User Profile directory and
registry entries appear to be, as far as I can determine, intact. Yet the
Application Log contains event 1500, "Windows cannot log you on because your
profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and
that your network is functioning correctly. " It appears that something is
corrupt, but I cannot determine what that might be.

state."
It appears that (B) is what actually occurred. In the User Profiles sheet I
found the profile listed with status "Backup". I created a new profile, and
copied my documents and application data to it, but how to prevent that
happening again, and what to do first if it does?
I have no idea how this profile "entered into a backup state" or what that
even means.

Hello, this is my first post.
I've got the same problem. Vista cannot load my profile, and I'm the
administrator with a password set. If I give a wrong password, the system
answers that I typed a wrong one, but if I enter the correct then says that
cannot load the profile. All the solutions I've found in Microsoft help
websites are based on errors occured on temporary profiles, but this is not
my case.
My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525 Intel Core Duo. Softw.: Windows Vista
Home Premium 32 bits.
Can anybody give me an idea on how to fix this problem?

Thank you Brink. But this tutorial didn't work, in step 6 (Option One)
Registry Editor didn't allow to rename the folder S-1-5... (SID Key). Option
Two in the same tutorial is not suitable for me, as I can't lose the content
in the user's folders.
Do you have any other clue?

Paco,
You can copy the contents of the "C:\Users\(user name)" folder to
something else, then create a new user account and copy the contents
into this account instead. You can then delete the old one after you
verufy everything is ok in the new one.
