Windows Update can't check for updates - 80072EFD

I've recently bought a brand new PC, fairly good specs with Vista, for my
University dorm. But because I can only use the University's internet
connection, something is blocking Windows Update from checking for updates.
The same happens with Windows Defender. So yes I know that the University's
connection is the problem, but I can't get a different provider & I can't
move the computer somewhere else to use another connection. I just can't
check for ANY Windows Updates at the moment.

Now there wouldn't be a problem if windowsupdate.com would allow me to
download from their site, but seeing as it's stupidly linear, I'm stuck. No
updates. No nothing.

So basically my question is, is there another way to obtain the updates
(other than ordering a CD), or can I turn off that bloody red shield with the
Windows Security Alert that makes it out as if I'll die unless I turn
Automatic Updates on.

Almost all updates can be downloaded from the MS Download Center, the
Microsoft Update Catalog, or the Windows Update Catalog sites:

MS Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?
MU Catalog: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
WU Catalog: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8973

Root Certificate updates can be only obtained via AU or the Update sites.

This page lists ALL updates for 2007 by month:

This page shows all Security updates in a chronological order:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

If the network is distributing updates via a local server then you
really should obtain the updates from that server. Contact the network
admin for details on the preferred method of updating and what changes
need to be made in case/when/if you take the system home.

Thanks for that. Although is there somewhere I'd be able to find out which
updates I don't have? Because I really have no idea what I'd need or what I
should get.

> I am also having the same error code pop up on my computer but I am still on the same network at home and at school that have never given me problems with updates before. I am unsure of how to correct this problem, as the sight has been of no help to me either. It simply directs me to go the Update Center and click automatic updates, but to no avail. Any help in this matter would be wonderful.
