F12 & F2...Try F8,that might let you get into safe mode, enter xp as
administrator,
run Sfc /Scannow from cmd.Otherwise, repair doesnt format the hd,it'll only
wipe out all xp updates, user files stay as is...

Re: Startup Failure/Corrupt Windows File: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\
Ricky, the problem is that I cannot gr tot Step2:
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert
the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the
CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery
Console. ...
I cannot get to the "Welcome to Setup" prompt
I have been able to do a F8 tapping and get the safe mode screen, and I have
tried at least 4 options here, and nothing, with some additional messages
about multidisk partitioning, I alwasy seem to end up with my original error
message...
How can I get to the place where I can enter the suggested 'R' to do this
repair?
Thanks

Re: Startup Failure/Corrupt Windows File: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\
Tony
If the CD is not being recognised in the BIOS it could be that the Boot
Sequence is not set up with the CD drive before the hard drive.
Do you have a copy of the Motherboard Manual that often comes with a new
computer. There will be a section there about the BIOS. If not what is
your computer make and model?

Re: Startup Failure/Corrupt Windows File: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\config\
Tony
You need to access System Setup and check the Boot Sequence. You need to
have ATAPI CD Rom before IDE Hard drive.
http://support.euro.dell.com/support...g/syssetup.htm
http://support.euro.dell.com/support...tm#boot_screen
When was this computer new? It seems to be circa 2000.
