Did you follow the instructions in the article PA Bear referenced?
You should be able to remove MSXML 4.0 using the Add/Remove Programs control
panel. For best results, do this in Safe Mode. Make sure you reinstall it
afterwards, as it wouldn't be installed if there wasn't at least one piece of
software on your computer using it. (Well, OK, it could have been installed by
software that you've since removed.)

RE: Update KB936181 fails to install
hi i just found a solution, just wonder if it works for u but it definitely
worked for me
so, u uninstall kb936181 from add and remove program then wait for the auto
update to prompt for install kb936181. then do the same with any update that
needs to be updated.
Hope it helps

RE: Update KB936181 fails to install
I use Vista Home Basic and am also having trouble with KB936181. I have tried
installing on five different occasions, but each time it aborts. I tried MS
Help, which redirected me to KB941833. I tried that, and got a message saying
'Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file
location exists and is writable'.
What do I do now?
